World Asthma Day 2026, focus on inhaler access

On May 5, 2026 the Global Initiative for Asthma, GINA, set World Asthma Day's theme as "Access to anti-inflammatory inhalers for everyone with asthma, still an urgent need." Health experts emphasized that inhaled anti-inflammatory controller inhalers are safe, not habit-forming, and essential to preventing attacks. Campaigners and authorities highlighted access gaps: Northern Ireland has about 40,000 children under 16 with asthma, a survey found one in ten children denied the correct asthma drug because of price, and over a third were hospitalized in the last year. Schools in Wales and other local authorities were urged to become more asthma aware so students can get timely treatment and avoid preventable emergencies.
