Congress split over War Powers Resolution and Iran
Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) is pressing the Senate Republican Conference for a vote to authorize the use of military force against Iran beyond the 60-day window set by the 1973 War Powers Act. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries have declined to back a War Powers resolution that would limit President Trump’s authority to strike Iran. Congress has not formally declared war since 1942 and lawmakers have repeatedly ceded operational war authority to presidents, leaving the War Powers Act largely untested amid recent U.S.-Iran military exchanges. The outcome will determine whether Congress reasserts its constitutional war-declaring role or allows the president broader latitude for future strikes against Iran.
White House trying to pull wool over Congress' eyes? White House Letter to claim War Powers clock stopped: "There has been no exchange of fire between United States Forces and Iran" since ceasefire began Gen Caine: "Since the ceasefire was announced, Iran...attacked US forces more than 10 times"
Perplexes me that anyone ever believes anything from Trump and his MAGA minions. All they do is lie lie lie lie lie.
Caine is as big a toady as Hegseth. We cannot trust or believe any "leader" in the American military right now.
Under international law, a naval blockade is considered an act of war. A lawful blockade can only exist during a declared, international armed conflict. It would seem we are at war.
That excuse didn’t work for Ross either.
It’s wrong to take their legal theories at face value. They know it’s a bullshit justification, but they also know they only need to provide GOP Congress with a talking point. There’s no appetite to hold this admin to account, so they’ll happily repeat the lie to let Trump keep playing King
5,000 people are pushing back on this. Here’s how to join them.
How to choose among a plethora of impeachable offenses?
The Trump regime lies to us on the daily. Americans have no idea whether Trump's proclamations are facts or the delusions from his advanced dementia. And the press presents these delusions as facts, aiding and abetting a demented malignant narcissist's fantasy vs. the reality.
In 1990, I talked my boss out of invoking the War Powers resolution before Bush 41 went into Kuwait. But Trump's attack on Iran is a different kind of conflict, and Congress should rein in this exercise in unlimited war-making, as I wrote here: www.theatlantic.com/newsletters/...
"Operation Epic Fury should also impel legislators to think about future ways to place presidential war powers back within the limits of a deliberative, constitutional republic." Yes, this. As my dad would say to my brother and me: Immediately, if not sooner.
As I remember it, even Bush-41 himself always envisioned removing Iraqi forces from Kuwait, and the degradation of those Iraqi ground and air forces, as an operation with well-specified, limited objectives...
