Congress split over War Powers Resolution and Iran

newsMay 5, 202615835

Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) is pushing the Senate Republican Conference to force a floor vote on a resolution authorizing the use of military force against Iran beyond the 60-day window in the 1973 War Powers Act. House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer have refused to back that War Powers resolution, declining to restrict President Trump’s military options after recent U.S.-Iran exchanges. Congress has not formally declared war since 1942 and has long left war-authority to presidents; Murkowski’s move would force lawmakers to either reassert congressional war powers or explicitly permit continued executive action amid repeated attacks on U.S. forces.
