Red Dress Day, May 5, honours Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women
On May 5 Red Dress Day, communities across Canada honored Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people. The Chiefs of Ontario in Toronto marked the day and warned the federal government allowed critical MMIWG2S+ funding to lapse with no notice or confirmation of renewal. Local memorials included a 10 AM gathering at Kew Beach organized by 2-Spirited People of the 1st Nations, offering ceremonies and community supports. Advocates warn the funding gap threatens survivor services, family searches, prevention programs, and long-term reconciliation work.
1/ On #RedDressDay, New Democrats honour the families, survivors, and advocates who work tirelessly to demand justice for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Two-Spirit and Gender Diverse Peoples.
2/ Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people face disproportionately high rates of violence, and are nearly six times more likely to be murdered than non-Indigenous people in Canada. Between 2019 and 2025, more than one in four women killed in this country were Indigenous.
