A hantavirus outbreak aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius has sickened multiple passengers, caused at least two deaths, and resulted in several hospitalizations including a passenger now in Zurich. Thirty passengers disembarked at St. Helena on April 24 and have been contacted by the company; Spanish and British authorities are imposing up to 45 days of quarantine for exposed travelers based on the virus's incubation window. A KLM flight attendant WHO briefly contacted one passenger has been hospitalized with hantavirus symptoms, creating concern about onward contacts. Public-health teams are racing to determine whether cases share a common environmental exposure, cabins, crew interactions, or cleaning procedures, or reflect human-to-human transmission because that distinction will change testing, isolation, and contact-tracing strategies.

I am heartened that *state* public health officials in Georgia, Arizona & California are monitoring passengers from the MV Hondius. Because of the work of those state officials, I assess low risk to the general public at this time — but it's important we continue to pay attention 🧵

And…I suppose if a cruise ship is the worst case scenario Petri dish we were able to conceive a week ago, the possibility of a working flight attendant with Hantavirus is beyond nightmare.

I never doubted it once the number of cases passed the original 2ppl. Need to wait for the test results on the hostess and the guy in France to be certain, but the hostess apparently had direct contact with the woman that died on the plane.

Right on cue. A new outbreak and immediate misinformation about “miracle cures.” Ivermectin is an antiparasitic drug, not a proven treatment for #hantavirus. Being an RNA virus does not mean ivermectin works against it. Promoting unsupported therapies during an outbreak causes real harm.
