Parents refuse newborn Vitamin K shot, infants bleeding to death
Parents are refusing the newborn vitamin K injection and infants have died from spontaneous brain and intestinal bleeds after leaving hospitals without the shot. The vitamin K shot is a single intramuscular dose given at birth to prevent Vitamin K deficiency bleeding, which can cause intracranial hemorrhage and severe intestinal bleeding in the first weeks of life. Public health experts link rising refusals to anti-vaccine misinformation, and parents describe sudden, unexplained bleeds that became fatal weeks after delivery. Because the injection is simple, safe, and highly effective, these refusals are causing preventable deaths and threaten newborn survival rates.
This story is absolutely horrifying. The insanity of any parent turning down a Vitamin K shot that can stop your newborn from bleeding to death is breaking my brain. I cannot imagine. I simply cannot. www.propublica.org/article/more...
Also, fuck this CDC to high heaven for eliminating the recommendation. Newborn babies are literally bleeding to death because of your garbage bullshit conspiracy theories. GAH, this piece made me SO ANGRY.
What possible story do these parents tell themselves when their baby dies and the doctor had recommended the shot, and they turned it down? “god’s will”??
This breaks my heart and my brain in all ways. That people would sacrifice their newborn on the alter of a heroin addict and a madman is just too much. They do not deserve to be parents. I said what I said.
the medical community should put together some graphic pamphlets describing & showing what happens if a given injection isn't provided. these knuckledraggers can't imagine the consequences of their decisions, so they need it literally handed to them.
Americans have access to the most information and education in the world and choose to believe grifters and charlatans over established science.
Look at all the MAGA morons that adore RFK Jr and Cankles and hold them accountable for these deaths.
I’ll make it simple for yall: if a medical provider refused to give a newborn a vitamin k shot, and that newborn died as a result, that medical provider would be charged with manslaughter at the very least. but if a PARENT refuses the vitamin k shot, and the newborn dies…nothing happens.
children are treated as the property of parents in this country.
honestly doctors don’t get shit for depriving care enough either. thinking of doctors who withhold abortions for patients developing sepsis. They kill these patients and don’t get blamed for it.
I appreciate what you’re doing; so much. As a teacher, and a human in the correct side of the children. I wouldn’t have survived had I not had someone like you to confide in at 14 years old 🙏 because it was safe. My teachers saved my life.
im interested in what the "pro life" people have to say about this
I feel like blaming social media or wellness or whatever is underpowered as an explanation here (and elsewhere.) Like, by the time you've decided to reject a Vitamin K shot for your newborn you've progressed from "skepticism" or whatever to outright nihilism. www.propublica.org/article/more...
Like the people who believed Wakefield's BS about vaccines and autism were wrong but if I try I can see the cognitive mechanisms that get you there. Hell, the COVID vaccines were genuinely novel. Rejecting a vitamin shot because of vibes? Something more profoundly wrong here.
It's been too long for many westerners since "had 7 kids 4 died in infancy/childhood" was the common experience. For my family, it was my grandparents. Then they got vaccines. And water/plumbing. People forget how fragile we are.
If you decline the vitamin K shot you should have to sign something saying you understand that you’re putting your newborn at risk of a future devastating bleed
Newborns deserve every bit of the advantages science has developed for them. These people should be locked in a room with their female ancestors that had 12+ kids and only saw some of them get past age 2.
Leaving the hospital without a vitamin K shot should fall under "against medical advice" and need to be documented the same way
I would never defend this (turning it down) but I also think obgyn/midwives need to do a better job of explaining what it is and why it's important. I had two hospital births and I don't think anyone ever explained to me why it was important, just if I was going to do it, it was just assumed I knew
