I’ll make it simple for yall: if a medical provider refused to give a newborn a vitamin k shot, and that newborn died as a result, that medical provider would be charged with manslaughter at the very least. but if a PARENT refuses the vitamin k shot, and the newborn dies…nothing happens.

I would never defend this (turning it down) but I also think obgyn/midwives need to do a better job of explaining what it is and why it's important. I had two hospital births and I don't think anyone ever explained to me why it was important, just if I was going to do it, it was just assumed I knew

All info from the CDC website (surprisingly it hasn’t been removed yet): The mortality rate for infants in 1900 was up to 30% before their first birthday from all causes. The reason for Vitamin K injections:

Why does my baby need a vitamin K shot? Babies have very little vitamin K in their bodies at birth because: Vitamin K from the mom is not easily shared with the developing baby during the pregnancy. The intestine of the newborn baby has very little bacteria, so they do not make enough vitamin K on their own. Without enough vitamin K, blood cannot clot well. As a result, bleeding can occur anywhere in the body. This means not only that bleeding from a cut or bruise may continue for a long time, but that uncontrolled bleeding into the brain and other organs may occur.

2/ them, so a simple car crash that a properly strapped in healthy newborn would survive no worries becomes deadly to babies who haven't had a vitamin K shot, because their bodies can't stop bleeding on their own and something as simple as a split scalp can be a life threatening emergency.

My sister is a nurse and witnessed a newborn develop a brain bleed after the mom refused the vitamin K shot. The baby now has permanent brain damage. This is an uncommon but very real risk.
