U.S. to grant visas to Flávio Bolsonaro and family

The U.S. State Department will issue visas allowing Brazilian senator and defeated presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro and his family to enter the United States, a senior Trump administration official said. The move comes days after Bolsonaro lost Brazil’s presidential election and after federal police ordered him to hand over his passports within 24 hours as part of an investigation. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, speaking in Brasilia, said he had heard Bolsonaro had left the country and called the departure shameful, saying Bolsonaro should have stayed in Brazil. U.S. visa issuance was confirmed by a senior administration official to multiple outlets; the visas will permit the family to enter the United States despite the Brazilian authorities’ travel restrictions.
