On the show’s 65th anniversary critics revisited season 3’s “The Shelter,” Rod Serling’s 1961 Twilight Zone episode that debuted in fall 1961. Written by Serling and featuring Larry Gates as Dr. Bill Stockton, the episode opens at Stockton’s birthday dinner when a radio warning about unidentified objects prompts a rush to basements and bomb shelters. Stockton is the only neighbor with a shelter and, despite pleas, locks his wife and child inside, triggering escalating hysteria among his neighbors. Prejudices surface as one man argues a foreign-born neighbor deserves safety less, and the crowd resolves to use a nearby flagpole as a battering ram to force entry. There is no supernatural element or otherworldly twist; the episode’s final turn is rooted in human behavior rather than fantasy. Though the Cold War civil defense context that made the scenario immediately terrifying is dated, the episode endures because it exposes prejudice and human nature, which critics say keeps it frightening today.
