Trump says he has a deal with Denmark to bolster US presence in Greenland

newsSep 18, 202629861

President Donald Trump announced an agreement with Denmark to bolster the U.S. military presence in Greenland, saying “no U.S. adversary can EVER have a base in Greenland, have a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in Greenland, without our express written approval.” Danish officials did not immediately confirm details, and the Danish embassy in Washington offered no immediate comment. Denmark’s prime minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s government leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen later posted that the agreement falls far short of U.S. acquisition and that it recognizes Danish sovereignty and Greenlandic self-determination. The U.S. State Department framed the deal as barring non-NATO countries from building bases or maintaining troop presences in Greenland. Observers noted the text of the agreement has not been released and questioned how it differs from a 1951 U.S.-Denmark defense treaty that already provided broad U.S. access to Greenland. The announcement provides a political off-ramp after months of Trump threatening to take the island while leaving open questions about what, if anything, actually changes on the ground.

From the information available, it seems this US-Denmark deal over Greenland changes almost nothing. US had bases there before; US continues to defendsl Greenland because it s in NATO. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/18/u...
