U.N. says U.S. strike on Iranian school may have been a war crime

A U.N. fact-finding mission concluded there are reasonable grounds to believe U.S. forces carried out military strikes on a primary school in Minab and a sports complex in Lamerd, Iran, on 28 February that amounted to war crimes. The Minab strike used a U.S. Tomahawk missile and collapsed the roof of the Shajareh Tayyebeh primary school, killing 156 civilians including 120 children, the mission found. The team said investigators determined the United States relied on intelligence that suggested a senior Iranian military commander was at the site but failed to verify the information or update targeting data before the strike. The mission described that failure as going beyond mere negligence, saying U.S. forces directed strikes while aware of a substantial risk of hitting a civilian object. The Lamerd attack damaged nearby residential buildings and a school and killed and injured 22 civilians, and the mission reached a similar conclusion about its indiscriminate nature. The panel also found Iranian authorities committed crimes against humanity during their crackdown on anti-government protests. The fact-finding team will submit its findings to the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Yes and . . . It's all people. People are responsible for killing these children. And lying about it. And dehumanizing them. And writing a whole report that says it was the fault of putatively non-human factors like "intel" and "A.i."

Impressive reporting. Highly recommended. My bottom line remains that those children died because Trump launched an illegal war on a whim—and the “Secretary of War” carried out patently illegal orders to attack Iran. Fixing this problem requires stronger guardrails to prevent wars on a whim.

Yeah, no shit. But also I’ll look at this later to learn what led to it happening. I remember commenting a while back this was likely something to do with AI being implemented into the military’s plans. If I was a cynical person, I’d think the US was using Iran as a testing ground for it…

But have you tried AI this month?

Methinks the fourth estate needs to find out whether Speaker Mike Johnson knew this investigative reporting was in the works when he recessed the House on Wednesday to avoid the Hegseth impeachment vote. In the America I once knew, a presidency would end and people would go to prison for this.

I don’t buy it. Someone chose to hit this target. Someone made sure it happened. Someone is now covering that up.

Not to downplay the environmental impact of the AI industry, but AI is killing people right now. We don’t have to wait for some unspecified future to see it.

Sounds like a totally irresponsible empire that should not be trusted with any weapons at all! An “international coalition of the willing” should organize a campaign to disarm this rogue state with its military bases all over the world and its illegal wars popping up everywhere
