Private jets pollute up to 14 times more than commercial planes

newsSep 18, 202619790

The Institute for Policy Studies' report High Flyers 2026 finds private jets produce 10 to 14 times more carbon emissions per passenger than commercial flights and that private aviation is growing rapidly in the US. The institute built a Private Jet Emissions Tracker using more than 20,000 open-source trackers to analyze flights around events like the Super Bowl, the Kentucky Derby and World Cup games. Private jet, linked climate emissions rose 50% in recent years while private flights now account for roughly 16% of Federal Aviation Administration flight operations. The report says about 256,000 people use private flights, roughly 0.003% of the global population, and that median wealth of a private jet owner is $190 million, with fractional owners at $140 million. The US Department of Transportation estimates noncommercial private jets make up 7% of airspace activity but contribute under 0.6% of taxes to the Airport and Airway Trust Fund. The boom in private aviation is increasing demand for hangars and runway capacity at local and regional airports. The report highlights lobbying and tax policy that benefit owners, noting the National Business Aviation Association spent about $2 million lobbying in 2025 for legislation providing major tax breaks to private jet owners, and includes a call from co-author Chuck Collins that those owners are not paying their fair share.
