Max Scherzer recorded his 3,516th career strikeout, passing Walter Johnson for sole possession of 10th place on MLB’s all-time strikeout list. The milestone came when Scherzer struck out Bryan de la Cruz during a start for the Toronto Blue Jays against the Philadelphia Phillies. Scherzer is 42 years old and entered the game with a 7.92 ERA. During the same game Trea Turner and Bryce Harper hit back-to-back homers off Scherzer to tie the score. Scherzer had recently come off the injured list and made a start for Toronto in Washington a couple weeks earlier, where he received a standing ovation. Baseball-Reference and Elias Sports were cited in posts tracking his climb into the top 10.
