In the first quarter at the United Center, Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington struck Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham in the head and jaw with her left arm on a streaking layup, sending Cunningham to the floor and prompting officials to review and upgrade the call to a Flagrant 2 foul and eject Carrington. Cunningham had been in the game for less than five minutes after Monique Billings stole a loose pass and threw ahead to her. After the play Carrington walked through the tunnel grinning and shaking her head while Sky fans applauded; she was not made available for comment. Carrington later posted the phrase "WHITE PRIVILEGE" on her Threads account and tagged the Fever, a post Cunningham called an attention-seeking reaction and said the league would address. Fever coach Stephanie White said she did not believe Carrington intentionally came at Cunningham across the neck. The incident follows ongoing controversy around Cunningham’s public comments this summer and occurred amid demonstrations near the United Center before the game.
