Tour de France Femmes, Stage 8: Demi Vollering wins in Nice and takes yellow

Demi Vollering soloed to victory on Stage 8 of the Tour de France Femmes, finishing the 171.9 km Sisteron to Nice route and taking the yellow jersey for FDJ United-Suez. The stage featured 1,864 meters of climbing with key ascents including the Col des Robines and the col de Toutes Aures, and the run-in to Nice included two steep final ramps that decided the day. Kasia Niewiadoma had worn yellow after winning on Mont Ventoux but could not hold Vollering on the final climbs, and Vollering regained seconds on Marlen Reusser to move into the overall lead. Race coverage and team reports say Vollering attacked on the Côte de la Ginestière with a FDJ lead-out earlier in the climb, then dropped Reusser in the closing 500 meters to take the stage. The result gives Vollering roughly an eight second advantage in the general classification heading into the final day, which features four climbs on the Col d’Èze and will determine the overall winner. Maeva Squiban crashed out of the breakaway during the stage, a separate incident that affected the day’s dynamics.

I get the feeling Vollering just doesn't trust her own ability enough and tries to do things with tactics that are way easier with legs. You could see from her trying to attack across to Kasia (when the gap was 10s) that she was worried about Reusser. When she really didn't need to be.

The Fdj plan, per DS Lars Boom, was indeed to "swap places" with Vollering and Géry after the corner to purposefully give Niewiadoma another bike length to make up. Slightly devious but nothing wrong if executed correctly. I guess Demi went on the outside, making Géry towards the barrier after she

What a finish! FDJ-Suez came with a plan and had Demi Vollering launch an attack on Côte de la Ginestière, the final climb of Stage 8. Demi's teammates formed a lead-out train for the climb's early portion, leaving Demi to attack off the front for the steepest section. (up to a 17% gradient)
