Pro-Israel group shifts support toward Haley Stevens in Michigan Senate primary

politicsJul 5, 2026522,478

A pro-Israel group has shifted support to U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens after State Sen. Mallory McMorrow suspended her U.S. Senate campaign Sunday, leaving a one-on-one Democratic primary with former Wayne County health chief Abdul El-Sayed about 30 days before the Aug. 4 primary. McMorrow announced she was suspending her campaign in a video and statement, thanking volunteers and noting her campaign relied on no corporate PAC dollars. Detroit News reported Stevens has benefited from millions of dollars in TV advertising while El-Sayed has gained momentum in polling. Stevens praised McMorrow in a statement and Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel endorsed Stevens after McMorrow’s exit. El-Sayed thanked McMorrow and urged her supporters to join his movement, criticizing party insiders he said backed an establishment candidate. With ballots already printed for the Aug. 4 primary and a statewide debate scheduled two days after the announcement, the race now more clearly frames Stevens in the establishment lane and El-Sayed in the progressive lane, a dynamic Michigan Democrats will watch as endorsements and outside spending consolidate.

Notable — Haley Stevens makes no outreach to Mallory McMorrow supporters, while Abdul El-Sayed explicitly welcomes them to his movement:

Haley Stevens on Mallory McMorrow suspending her campaign

“Anyone who raises their hand to serve the people of Michigan and puts forward thoughtful ideas for how they would lead earns my respect. Mallory McMorrow has been an important voice, both in this race and in the State Senate, for policies that benefit Michigan’s children and families, and I look forward to working with her in the future to build a stronger Michigan for everyone.”

“As we enter the final month of the primary election, I'm excited to continue to make my case to Michiganders why I'm the strongest Democrat to defeat Mike Rogers this November, lower costs, protect manufacturing jobs, and stand up to Trump's abuses of power.”

!! Mallory McMorrow drops out of the Michigan Senate primary, leaving a one-on-one contest between Abdul El-Sayed and Haley Stevens. This dramatically changes the dynamic of the race. A must-win seat for Democrats this fall.
