The Pentagon acknowledged on Friday that 21 U.S. service members have died during operations related to the war with Iran, raising the official toll after its last update on Sept. 29. The Defense Department added two previously unreported noncombat deaths: one soldier whose death had been announced earlier but not counted and a sailor who died last month, according to reporting tied to the Pentagon update. The Washington Post reported the tally alongside a wounded count of 865 U.S. service members. The revised figures have entered politics: the House has passed multiple nonbinding resolutions urging the White House to end the war, which Rep. Mike Kennedy has opposed by voting nay each time, while critics such as Bob Harvie have cited the 21 deaths in calling for an immediate end to the conflict. The casualty recount prompted renewed debate between candidates in Utah’s 4th Congressional District, where Democrat Jonny Larsen said ending the war is necessary to restore order and lower costs; the district’s election is Nov. 3.
