Pope Leo XIV declares death penalty inadmissible amid US livestream plans

newsOct 10, 2026433,795

Pope Leo XIV declared the death penalty "inadmissible" on Saturday as he marked the World Day Against the Death Penalty, quoting the revised Catholic teaching introduced by Pope Francis that capital punishment attacks human dignity. In a post on X the pope wrote that the common good and justice can be secured without recourse to executions and closed the message with the hashtag #NoDeathPenalty. The statement came as the U.S. Defense Department announced plans to livestream the Dec. 3 firing squad execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, who was convicted of killing 13 people and wounding 32 at Fort Hood in 2009. Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican secretary of state, called the planned livestream “truly incomprehensible” and said it was “unacceptable to turn death into a spectacle.” Leo has emphasized prison visits during his papacy, including an April visit to Bata prison in Equatorial Guinea, and is scheduled to visit a prison in Buenos Aires on his upcoming Latin America tour. The pope’s reiteration reinforces Vatican opposition and joins vocal church criticism aimed at the U.S. plan to broadcast a military execution.

One day after the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the National Association of Evangelicals came out against the Pentagon’s plan to livestream an execution, Pope Leo has published a tweet reiterating the Catholic Church’s opposition to the death penalty.

The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person. The common good can be safeguarded and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment: effective systems of detention have been developed that protect citizens while at the same time do not completely deprive those who are guilty of the possibility of redemption.

Fun fact: the Catholic church’s opposition to the death penalty is how we got the jury trial. It started in 1215!

Trump has published a Truth Social post pointing to Robert Jeffress — a longtime Trump supporter and pastor of First Baptist Dallas — and his support for a public execution.* Note: the USCCB, National Association of Evangelicals, Union for Reform Judaism and others have come out against the plans.

Yep, the pope really believes Heaven is real, and that the knowledge of when an individual is beyond salvation belongs to God and not man.

[just a whisper] excommunicate vance excommunicate vance [several murmurs together] excommunicate vance excommunicate vance [en masse] Excommunicate Vance! Excommunicate VANCE [massed bellowing, stamping, banging desks] EXCOMMUNICATE VANCE!!! EXCOMMUNICATE VANCE!!! [total uproar, bullets in the air]

the whole practice is obviously barbaric but the redemption piece is key to me. if we write people off as completely beyond redemption that's an indictment on us

Why is THE POPE still using the website for nazis and perverts?

It’s not surprising that the Catholic Church is so adamantly against the death penalty. Heck, this guy killed the pope and they didn’t even excommunicate him.

It’s almost as if the Pope really believes in Christianity, that’s actually kinda refreshing
