Xbox adds disc-to-digital licensing to Series X and One consoles

Microsoft has rolled out a disc-to-digital licensing feature to all Xbox Series X and Xbox One consoles. When a user signs into their Xbox profile and inserts a supported game disc, the console displays a confirmation and issues a digital license for that title. The feature exited Xbox Insider testing a few weeks ago; Ubisoft and Sega have agreed to participate, but the program covers only supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X games while Xbox 360 titles are excluded. Digital licenses enable Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming for games that support those services, and Microsoft’s support page says content on qualifying discs, such as included DLC, may be included with the license. A digital license can transfer away from a gamer if someone else inserts the same disc into a console and links it to their account. Microsoft positioned the rollout as a move to help players who bought many physical Xbox games remain in the Xbox ecosystem while next-generation disc support for Project Helix remains unknown.
