Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu announced he has withdrawn from the squad and will not participate in Sunday’s Nations League match against Israel, saying he felt "it would be wrong to participate" in light of atrocities in the region. The Bolton Wanderers keeper confirmed the decision in a statement on Instagram and stressed his respect for teammates, management and the Irish people, adding his stance is not against the Israeli people or the Jewish community. A scheduled training session was cancelled after reports one player planned to boycott, triggering a four-hour debate at the team hotel after which a majority of players voted to fulfil the fixture. Bazunu did not take part in the afternoon training at Nagyerdei Stadion and the Ireland team are expected to wear black armbands tomorrow, a gesture FAI chief David Courell said would recognise "all lives lost in the conflict." Manager Heimir Hallgrimsson acknowledged there may be further discussions among the players this evening, and the FAI and players will make a significant donation to charity. The Nagyerdei Stadium in Debrecen has a capacity of 20,340, but the Israel Football Association said only 150 tickets had been sold to its supporters and 100 complimentary tickets had been distributed.
