Justin Verlander exits mound for final MLB start, embraced by daughter

sportsSep 26, 2026604,314

Justin Verlander made the final start of his MLB career on Saturday, Sept. 26, at a sold-out Comerica Park and, after recording the last out, was greeted on the mound by his daughter when Tigers manager A.J. Hinch summoned her. Verlander entered the outing with 3,554 career strikeouts, four ahead of former Tigers teammate Max Scherzer, who has 3,550; the two are eighth and ninth on MLB's all-time list. Verlander, 43, was drafted No. 2 overall by Detroit in 2004, won the 2011 American League MVP and Cy Young with the Tigers, and finishes a career with a 81.8 WAR. This season Verlander made just one start for the Tigers because of hip and hamstring injuries. The mound embrace and Verlander’s emotional exit were highlighted throughout game coverage as the close to a 20-plus year big-league career that included three Cy Youngs and two World Series titles between Verlander and Scherzer. With Scherzer still active and four strikeouts behind, the two pitchers remain locked in a late-career statistical race for MLB strikeout standings.

My goodness, what an incredible moment. After Justin Verlander secured the final out of his career, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch came out of the dugout...to summon Verlander's daughter out to embrace her dad on the mound.

The last time Justin Verlander comes off the mound. Notice how Laz Diaz doesn't check his glove for pine tar. Just going to say interesting
