The Los Angeles Dodgers activated Shohei Ohtani off the 15-day injured list Wednesday and optioned top prospect Josue De Paula to Triple-A Oklahoma City to open a roster spot. Ohtani is expected to serve as the designated hitter in the Dodgers' five remaining regular-season games as Los Angeles pursues a first-round bye. Manager Dave Roberts said Ohtani's health improved from a 5 to an 8 or 9 on a 1-to-10 scale, while hitting coach Aaron Bates had earlier said Ohtani "looked extremely compromised" before the IL stint. Ohtani has not faced live pitching since landing on the IL and will return after working with coach pitching and a Trajekt machine; he enters the stretch with a season line of .277, 30 home runs, 80 RBIs and a .902 OPS. De Paula, who hit .323 with one home run, seven RBIs, a .500 on-base percentage and a 1.081 OPS across 11 big-league games, was sent down but remains postseason-eligible because his earliest activation date is Oct. 3, the first game of the National League Division Series. The Dodgers also activated Tarik Skubal off the bereavement list and optioned Kyle Hurt as part of Wednesday's roster moves.
