WSJ: Mark Carney proposes Canada seek 'associate member' ties with EU
Three-byline alert: 🚨 “.. Carney has even suggested Canada take on a new title: ‘Associate Member of the European Union.’ .. The EU, not known for its flexible enforcement of membership rules, is open to the idea ..” @wsj.com www.wsj.com/world/europe...
Trump is the worst thing to ever happen to the United States.
We in Canada welcome it, if it comes to pass. I know it sounds harsh, but many who live here are so done with the US.
The fact this is even on the table should set off alarms in Washington. Canada has spent generations economically tied to the U.S., and now it’s exploring a future built more around Europe because trade talks with us collapsed. That’s a strategic loss.
We would welcome Canada with open arms ❤️ Lets do this!
This Canadian is grateful for the shift away from a country who treats their "ally" like an enemy.
If Trump can act as an associate of Russia and NK, the Carney has every right to act like an associate of the EU. Amiright?
The world is moving on. And frankly, the world will probably be better for it. But we won’t.
Make America a Flyover Country
None of this matters until we can compete in Eurovision
I love this for them. Hey, @mark-carney.bsky.social - can this work for California?
What @spignal.bsky.social started with a tongue-in-cheek column is now a real proposal
Imagining how much more complicated this will become were this to happen.
Writers calling this a risky move, right, because Canada's current main trading partner is so stable and risk-free.
Since everyone's weighing in, I think free movement coming up with Macron isn't that serious (I view him as more open to those sorts of ideas than others). But even a more streamlined study abroad process would be great (with the caveat that it relies on the provinces cooperating sooooo 🤷♀️)
Honestly, the EU is really quite flexible when it comes to "associate membership", because that doesn't really mean anything.
Canada is an autonomous sovereign country. Many EU citizens have dual citizenship as Cdns. Canada has similar values & beliefs as Europe. Canada-EU has CETA trade agreement signed in 2016. Around when I worked on Parliament Hill, later volunteered w/ Chrystia Freeland, #cdnpoli M. of Foreign Affairs
WSJ: PM Mark Carney is exploring whether Canada could become an “associate member” of the European Union The EU is open to the idea. This would create a new membership status, per EU & Canadian officials.
This absolutely needs to happen to fully counter both U.S. and Russian aggression.
Important detail to be confirmed! - EU and Canada to lay sea cables to get off US tech - free live/work movement
It makes sense. They’re neighbors facing the same threats.
Waiting out Trump is not a viable option for Canada: future Trump-like tariffs from another wannabe despot are always possible. Canada can regain economic security by partnering with the EU.
UK would be a natural candidate for something like this…should they be interested.
As a Canadian I'm all in! Unfortunately, we need new SOLID alliances as the USA cannot be trusted (by any country) going forward.
Astonishing. And yet a door opening for the UK.... if we weren't still facing in the other direction, examining our navel, and hanging on the every utterance of a mustard-trousered bullshitter?
Katrina and the Waves already won Eurovision so there is a legal precedent.
it requires two Eurovision victories, the rules are simple and clear
Wow! Yess let's make this happen 🇨🇦🇪🇺
There is no such thing as "associated membership" of the EU. What are we even talking about? It can't be a customs union (Canada still has to trade with the US). We already have a rock solid defence alliance, an expansive trade deal and Canada is a member of Europe's space programme and Eurovision.
I'm ok with Canada join the EU. At least it would give us more reliable trade relations than the US.
Winter in Portugal, Spain, Italy or Greece rather than f🍁cking Florida or Arizona? HELL YES👍🇨🇦🥳
Statt 51. Staat der USA wird Kanada vielleicht eine Art Mitglied der EU. Ich finds super.
And could the UK also become an 'associate member'...? 🤔
Great video here that lays out various paths with easy to understand illustrations of the options that could be considered. #Carney #Europe www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1-f...
Here's a non-paywalled version of the reporting on Canada becoming a possible "associate member" of the EU. It suggests Canada is willing to agree free movement of people, which (if true) would mean that the EU would be willing to agree more internal market access. www.reuters.com/world/americ...
As always with these stories, the devil will be in the details. We'll know on Wednesday what the EU Commission is willing to negotiate, although anything concrete also needs sign off by Member States and European Parliament.
As a Canadian small business operator, anything that could streamline shipping between Canada & the E.U. or decrease taxes would be wholly welcome. U.S.-imposed tariffs on Canada are killing North American trade for businesses on both sides of the Border, so best to explore friendlier pastures. 🇨🇦🇪🇺
Historians won't write about the end of the US empire as a violent and sudden collapse. It will be marked by states running out of money, bridges and tunnels failing, and the largest trading partner turning away from a close partnership that had lasted over 50 years (at least since Nixon).
If Canada accepts free movement that becomes a significant Rejoin sell in the UK - a big, English speaking economy to move to!
A lot of support for that in my circle of friends here in the Netherlands - closer ties, yes please 🍁
It would be such an economic boon to Canada. At a time when their diversification plans require a large and rapid expansion in their skilled workforce. Accessing Europe’s labour market is the obvious solution.
It’s going to take decades to rebuild our relationships.
Politics is downstream of culture
This would be genuinely amazing
Que básicamente serán UE sin decirlo en voz alta , vamos. Canadá en Schengen.
For most of my life, I had the legal right to live and work anywhere in the EU. I never thought that my best chance to get that back might be getting Canadian citizenship by ancestry.
The world is moving on from us. Congratulations President Trump for destroying 80 years of US hegemony.
Oh please, this would be so much fun
I see an associate member as more likely and will solve the hurdles that a full member would pose.
There are a more than a couple of countries right now that might seek this without the free movement of people btw...
This isn't good news for us.
PM Carney pushes idea of making Canada 'associate member' of EU, WSJ reports reut.rs/4yxQ04L The UK right now: 👇🏽🤭
They did it to themselves! Just like the US voted in a felon. You got yourself into this mess. Get yourself out of it!
Smiles and then begins to chuckle
Brexit was always going to be a failure.🫣
The UK needs to rejoin the EU! 🇬🇧🇪🇺
Sorry to keep ramming this point home. The U.K. left the arises on the back of English votes. Every part of my country, Scotland, voted to remain by a large margin and have never stopped fighting to return. Don’t tar us all with the same brush.
He tried to warn them. They didn’t listen. 🤷🏻♀️
🇨🇦🇪🇺 WSJ: Canadian PM Carney is pursuing a major shift toward Europe after trade relations with the U.S. deteriorated. His government is exploring an “associate member” relationship with the EU that could deepen cooperation on energy, critical minerals, AI, defense, research, and trade.
The plan aims to reduce Canada’s dependence on the U.S. by creating stronger economic and strategic links with Europe. Ideas include easier movement of goods and workers, shared infrastructure, joint technology projects, and closer defense ties.
It makes good political and economic sense. Why would you trust in trade agreements with an untrustworthy nation who at a whim puts tariffs on trade that not only affect the supplying nation but puts the cost on the American citizen 🇨🇦🇪🇺🇬🇧
This Canadian is all for it!
kind of gave him no choice @ Donnie & Lutnick
And I think it will happen, because Canada's culture and values are completely in line with Europe.
Indeed, DT and his squad are just cancer metastasis.
WSJ is reporting that Canada and the EU are exploring ways to improve our close relationships in defence, trade, etc Possibly some kind of "Associate" membership being discussed. No political integration as we're not in Europe. Closer ties with the EU would enhance both parties 🇨🇦🇪🇺 #EU #cdnpoli
Europe, play very nice with the Canadians. This is a big chance. Let's get on the winning side of secession of United Shitholes together
From WSJ: Mark Carney’s Audacious Bid to Make Canada an ‘Associate Member’ of the EU 🔷 If successful, this would be a big development!
Carney. Will. Succeed. Carney. Is. Succeeding. Carney. Has. Succeeded.
Canada’s recent military agreement with Ukraine, was huge. You never know when Canada might need access to the best drone technology, in order to protect themselves from their southern neighbor.
He's putting in the hard diplomatic work to build a strong relationship with a powerful economic group. Very interesting to watch to see how different he is than we are here in the U.S.
Great idea. Trump is burning bridges with mulch gusto. He’s such a wanker on the world stage. He’s way in over his head.
I’m convinced Carney’s team is intentionally leaking this. Alternatively someone high up on Carney’s team has been leaking for a while.
I like it!..lets do it Mark!..Fuck Trump
🇨🇦🇪🇺Canadian PM Carney pushes the idea of making Canada an 'associate member’ of EU. Canada & the EU are discussing ways to let Canada’s goods, services & workers involved in strategic supply chains move freely, effectively shifting the EU border. #Cdnpoli🍁 #CanadaSky💪🇨🇦 www.ctvnews.ca/canada/artic...
If this happens it will be so fn amazing. I even heard Canada&EU are talking about sea cables to connect each other to get off US tech!!!
I don't see a downside to this.
The European Union is the real group of friends.
This guy has a ton of smarts. And guts.
Very excited about the opportunity this brings!
PM Carney in discussions to become an “associate member” of the EU. 🔹It would be a new membership designation 🔹Status would fall short of full EU membership 🔹may involve visa-free living and work in the EU Wall Street Journal • Sept. 13
