George Osborne urges UK to rejoin EU customs union
George Osborne calls for UK to rejoin EU customs union and boost trade
Maybe his cabinet shouldn’t have held that stupid and needless referendum then.
The Tories about the last ten years:
Is it some kind of joke? The Tories who turned party division into a referendum now want to back-pedal! Osborne should commission a UK tapestry project, which explains Tory ineptitude leading up to Brexit. 'The Great Brexit Tapestry' Osborne can be curator & we could loan it to France.
The EU isn’t going to bend to UK terms…
The same George Osbourne whose unnecessary austerity era played a vital role in swinging the vote towards leave in the first place? Ok
The main problem is Trust bc a deal must be a long term, civilisational agreement. And Britons just voted twice for Farage in Clacton, the very promoter of Brexit. How can anyone trust these people? How to assure that, once signed, the deal wouldn't be throw away by common, "informed" Britons?
It would be more helpful for him to acknowledge and explain the role that his austerity policies played in encouraging people to vote for what he correctly critiques here.
Says the author of the austerity programme that handed victory to the Brexiters …shameless
It would help, but only a little. www.cer.eu/insights/cos...
George Osborne? *That* George Osborne?
Bit fucking rich when you were Chancellor of the Exchequer at the time, George. I'll never forgive you. I will always despise you. Always.
A) the UK can’t join the EU Customs Union without membership. B) a CU won’t address the substantive issues caused by Brexit like regulatory alignment.
The European Union agrees to allow the UK to rejoin the EU, provided it changes its names to VerySorryLand.
Dickheads continue to dominate our politics and media. These people ruined a functional country. It wasn’t perfect but I’ve never seen public services as bad as they are now.
I despise Osborne but in this matter he's obviously right.
Osborne: rejoining EU will be easy peasy. Everyone else: getting English nationalists to accept €uro, FoM & Schengen will be lemon, lemon difficult.
George Osborne wants the Customs Union but not the Single Market. I'm so sick of this stupid idea. The Customs Union means a joint seat at the WTO. That's useless unless you have cross border manufacture with the free movement of goods, services, capital and workers facilitated by the Single Market.
I swear most politicians do not understand what a customs union is It is an external-facing customs regime and does little to make inter European trade flow
OMFG — they’ve been replaying this nonsense for a decade now. They get slapped down by the EU, shut up for six months or so, then crawl back out and start the whole bloody thing again. That’s not a contribution to the debate. At this point, it’s economic sabotage.
Would have thought that, with his record as Chancellor, he would be better off keeping his ideas to himself.
Agreed. A customs union is an improvement on current TCA arrangements, but it is not going to move the dial. EFTA/EEA is the minimum here, if we are going to repair the damage. Sometimes in power you have to make the best decision … not go after the Reform vote.
The cruelty is the point. English governments do not under any circumstances want their citizens to have freedom of movement within the EU and vice versa.
EU said during the negotiations to leave we could have Customs Union, Single Market and Freedom of Movement - all 3 or none of them - no cherry picking.
Ah, the old "rejoin the Customs Union" line as proof you don't really understand trade or UK relations with the EU... www.theguardian.com/business/202...
never understood what we were a member of for the best part of 50 years. Staggering when you think about it.
It’s the glibness that gets me every time - something that is very easy to say when the reality is that it is far from that. Cherry picking of the highest order with the snooty view of they (EU) would go ‘of course, welcome not a problem’. Subtext - he knows they f’d up and trying to pass buck.
George Osborne admitting Britain has "gone off a cliff" since Brexit is a striking moment of honesty from a key architect of the referendum debate. Pointing out that ignoring economic realities is stalling our recovery hits the mark. When will leaders listen? (1/2) 🤔 #FBPE
Given he was part of the crew that chose to put Brexit on the ballot when no one knew what it meant. Given he created the conditions for a populist backlash with austerity... Much of this is on him & there's no sign he's accepting any responsibility
Calling out the "conspiracy of silence" around post-Brexit economic damage highlights the urgent need to rebuild trade ties with the EU. Admitting the cliff-edge drop is the first step toward pragmatically fixing border barriers. How do we reopen single market access? (2/2) #FBPE
He’s the utter bastard who robbed ‘50s women of six years of retirement and pension in a single sweep - and laughed about it. He is filth. #backto60
Brexit jihadists will accuse George Osborne of talking Britain down. They'll insist that Osborne needs to believe harder in post-Brexit Britain as an independent sovereign nation. Or similar ludicrous post-truth nonsense. bsky.app/profile/fife...
Arsonist switches career to fire fighter
Former British chancellor George Osborne said the UK's economy has "fallen off a cliff" since Brexit and that rejoining the EU customs union would be the fastest route to recovery.
One bit of the UK can rejoin Europe... 🤫
"It's a quite simple thing to do.." is the part where I lost interest. Rejoining the CU would take years, be insanely complex. And don't even mention the "Reform factor" - rejoining any EU institution would be undone by a RefCon govt. and the EU side knows that. Sorry, but here is where we are.
Now he is out of power he can say this but I think it was so divisive that most politicians don't want to touch it, and Farage and Co will have a field day saying look your vote is being ignored.
House "on fire since arson" says arsonist.
The brass neck of him! Brexit was supercharged by the backlash from Osborne's austerity measures.
