The Vegas Golden Knights signed captain Mark Stone to a two-year, $18 million extension, the team announced Saturday. The deal carries a $9 million average annual value and runs through the 2028-29 season, a slightly lower cap hit than his current $9.5 million AAV. Stone, 34 and entering his ninth season with Vegas and seventh as captain, was set to become an unrestricted free agent after the upcoming season. He comes off a 73-point season in 60 games and is described by the team as a top even-strength play driver, a key special teams contributor, and an emotional leader. Stone has a notable injury history and will turn 35 in May, but he told reporters on June 16, "I want to keep playing as long as I can." From the Golden Knights' perspective the $9 million AAV should provide value; Stone will be the club's third-highest-paid player and the team projects $86.8 million in cap hit for 2027-28 when this extension is in effect.
