Ben Shelton defeated Frances Tiafoe 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 to reach his first Grand Slam final and will face top seed Alexander Zverev on Sunday at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The 23-year-old Shelton, seeded eighth, said "Lo voy a buscar aquí mismo, y voy a dejarlo todo en la pista" and cited national support as he chases to end a 23-year drought without a U.S. men's major champion. Shelton arrived in the semifinal after an epic quarterfinal win over defending champion Carlos Alcaraz that finished at 3:33 a.m., the latest finish in US Open history. Zverev, the Roland Garros champion and the tournament's highest seed, beat Karen Khachanov 6-3, 7-6(7), 7-6(6) to reach the final and said he hopes to "avoid that American dream" on Sunday. Zverev is 29 years old and is trying for his second Grand Slam title of the year and his career after losing the Wimbledon final to Jannik Sinner; his major record this season stands at 24-2. The semifinals took place on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, and the Shelton-Tiafoe match was framed as the highlight of the session in New York. The final will decide whether a U.S. man wins a major for the first time since Andy Roddick in 2003.
