Anthropic says it blocked possible efforts to build biological weapons

Anthropic reported that this year it disrupted multiple suspected attempts to use its Claude models for research that could assist biological‑weapons development, and that it shut down the work when it could not determine whether projects were legitimate or nefarious. The company said it banned associated accounts and dismantled relay networks after observing abuse by actors it described as criminal hacking gangs, Chinese security bureaus, Russia‑linked spies and Yemen‑based arms manufacturers. Anthropic detailed specific cases including a study tied to a military research institute that aimed to make a mosquito‑borne virus more harmful, and a spring 2026 French‑speaking actor who used Claude via a custom Rust scanner to validate exposed API keys. The report also described attempts to use Claude for conventional weapons research in three cases in China, two in Russia and one in Yemen, plus an automated OSINT identity profiling campaign targeting Israeli and Jewish diaspora individuals. Anthropic said a third‑party service routed surveillance footage from Chengdu to Claude in one incident. Andrew Weber, a senior fellow at the Council on Strategic Risks who reviewed the report before its release, called the findings "chilling examples of state‑sponsored biological weapons developers tapping into the rapidly advancing capabilities" of leading AI models. Anthropic published these details publicly and said it had shut down the flagged projects and disabled the accounts and infrastructure used to access its assistants.
