Clean electricity could trigger climate 'positive tipping points', report finds

A University of Exeter report, produced with the Earthshot Prize and authored by research fellow Steve Smith, finds a rapid global shift to cheap solar and wind could trigger a cascade of progress across the environment. The analysis applies tipping point science to 51 priority areas across five goals: protecting nature, cleaning the air, reviving oceans, eliminating waste and tackling the climate crisis. The report names clean electricity the highest-leverage transition because cheaper solar and wind lower costs for electric vehicles, heat pumps and cleaner industrial processes while cutting air pollution and stimulating further demand for renewables. Smith and the report build on work by Prof Tim Lenton and say solar, wind and electric vehicles have already crossed positive tipping points in many major markets. The transition faces barriers of slow planning and insufficient grid expansion in wealthy countries and a severe investment shortfall in poorer regions; Africa receives less than 2 percent of global clean energy investment despite having about 60 percent of the world’s best solar resources. The authors estimate coordinated policies supporting power, transport and heating could bring forward tipping points in those sectors by two to eight years. Transforming commodity supply chains for products such as beef, soy, palm oil, timber, cocoa and coffee is another high-impact intervention, with the report saying aligned policies in large markets could make deforestation-free products the global norm.
