Giuliani Says Mamdani Should Skip 9/11 Memorial

newsSep 7, 2026543,200

Rudy Giuliani told the New York Times that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani should skip the 9/11 memorial, delivering what the article called an anti-Muslim diatribe. Giuliani compared Mamdani to the Sept. 11 hijackers, saying the attackers showed hostility to America and that Mamdani is hiding similar hostility. Mamdani has said he will attend the Ground Zero ceremonies and said, "I’m proud to be the mayor of this city. I want this week to focus on the families whose loved ones were stolen from them 25 years ago in the horrific act of terror of 9/11 and to focus also on the first responders who did everything they could." Social-media responses quoted in posts pointed to Giuliani’s disbarment and his post-2020 alignment with Donald Trump while calling his remarks bigoted and saying Giuliani, not Mamdani, should be sidelined at memorial events. The exchange has crystallized a public contrast between Mamdani’s stated intent to center victims and first responders and Giuliani’s continued confrontational public commentary about political opponents at 9/11 observances.

In a story that's built on questions of Giuliiani's credibility vs. Mamdani's, the New York Times should have pointed out that Giuliani has been disbarred in both Washington, DC, and New York.

The post-9/11 lionization of Giuliani rings hollow for many of us who lived and worked in lower Manhattan that day. He and his staff (along with Bush's EPA) frequently reassured us that the air quality was fine. It wasn't, as was apparent to anyone who was there on 9/11 and the weeks thereafter. 1/

Also, while it might be difficult to adapt for the house style, that time he was filmed preparing to receive sexual favors from what he thought was a teenage girl

Is there a single good faith argument for taking these people seriously? These calls are transparently racist and islamophobic, and it’s embarrassing for the Times to even remotely validate it with a headline like this.

One is a convicted disbarred lawyer, the other is the Mayor of New York. I know which one should be there, and which one has destroyed all the goodwill he obtained that day.

Is MEK not going to stand up for Mamdani here?

If your headline starts with "Giuliani says," I don't care what follows unless and until he turns state's evidence against Trump.

Statements that Mamdani should stay away from the 9/11 memorial are so nakedly bigoted they take my breath away. Ffs, he was a little elementary school kid living in NYC when the attacks happened. If you think he should stay away from the memorial, you are a shit person and an idiot

Giuliani strikes me as a dude who should have passed a long time ago and now we’re just getting him doing whatever while he’s waiting for his life choices to catch up

Shouldn’t you be in jail

“But in the years since, Mr. Giuliani has politically drifted far to the right …” baloney. The guy who led police officers in a riot against Mayor David Dinkins years before did not “drift” after 9/11

Not one mention of Giuliani’s 9/11 scandals and fuckups and scandalous fuckups.
