UN expert Albanese urges UK to consider ban on settlement goods

newsSep 7, 202618636

The UK’s planned ban on trade with unlawful Israeli settlements is a welcome first step, but UN special rapporteur Francesca Albanese told the Guardian it must go further to amount to a “true paradigm shift.” Albanese called a ban on settlement goods “absolutely important” but said it should be tied to implementing the International Court of Justice advisory opinion of 2024, which found Israel’s presence in the occupied territories unlawful and said states have an obligation not to recognise or assist it. She warned that limiting measures to agricultural products and cosmetics would be “a fraction of what sustains the occupation” and urged the package to extend to services, to progressive suspension of British intelligence cooperation, to ending all arms licensing and to reviewing flights from RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. Albanese said a state that bans dates from Ma’ale Adumim while continuing to licence equipment used at checkpoints has not changed its relationship with the occupation, it has merely “rearranged its communication strategy.” The Guardian report notes Palestinian groups in the UK are waiting for the policy details, and that former foreign secretary David Lammy withdrew most arms export licences in September 2024. Albanese warned that if the measures do not include these broader steps, over time they will be seen as not a reckoning but a press release.

Itamar Ben-Gvir calls on Netanyahu to recognize the Falkland Islands / Malvinas as "territory under [British] occupation" in response to the forthcoming trade ban on Israeli settlement goods and services in occupied Palestine.

It's time for the State of Israel to publicly recognize that the Malvinas Islands are Argentine territory under occupation, which the British violently steal from the Argentine people. The British are not content with merely occupying the territory; they also carry out oil drilling there and steal the money from the Argentine people.
I call upon Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to recognize Argentina's sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands and to impose sanctions on Great Britain as long as the occupation continues. 🇦🇷🇮🇱

An incredibly annoying thing about the way discourse on 🇮🇱/🇵🇸 works is that you have to pretend that "do the people living under your sovereign rule have a right to self-government or self-determination?" is some incomprehensible double standard cooked up by decolonial extremist postmodernists.

Ben-Gvir is obviously one of the worst people alive but he is hilariously Online sometimes

There's been an increasing trend of reactionaries with imperial ambitions cynically using the language of decolonisation to support those ambitions and those of others. Israel, Argentina, Morocco, even the US when you look at how Claremont talks about Canada and Greenland. Hindu nationalists too

eva84

the US and israel have now both said they are tentatively supportive of argentina invading sovereign british territory

I am honestly pretty entertained about the prospect of Britain and Argentina having a second Falklands war over Israel. I think we should have a game show where people can vote on the next historical conflict to rerun.

How is it simultaneously 1933, 1953, 1973, and 2003 at the same time

Remarkable to be witnessing the Chud Axis forming directly before our eyes.
