Orioles claim outfielder Luis Robert Jr. off Mets waivers

The Baltimore Orioles claimed outfielder Luis Robert Jr. off waivers from the New York Mets. Robert hit 10 home runs with a .702 OPS in 58 games for the Mets this season. Baltimore will assume the remainder of his contract obligation, roughly $3 million, which includes a $2 million buyout if the team declines his $20 million option for 2027. The claim is notable because the Orioles already have a crowded outfield and Robert arrives after a third straight down year and a lengthy injury history. The Orioles could use Robert as a platoon option in center with Colton Cowser, shift Cowser to left and Dylan Beavers to right, or pair Robert with Enrique Bradfield Jr. after rosters expand on September 1. Team writers suggest Robert would likely replace Christian Franklin in the near term, but the club should avoid making him an everyday player given his injury risk.

My greatest regret of Luis Robert Jr.’s Mets tenure is that he never stuck quite enough to make the nickname “LuBob” happen publicly, even though teammates used it behind the scenes. An all-timer IMO.

Here in Chicago word got out to reporters that he didn't like that nickname, and that we shouldn't use it. Times change and I have no idea how he feels about it now, but that was the case in the pandemic days.

I'm convinced this Orioles team is destined to be a couple games under .500 no matter how much they add or subtract. They keep climbing back to *just* on the verge of a playoff spot and then lose 4 of 5 or something and have to start over.

I'm a Mets fan and I didn't even realize that the Mets put Robert Jr. on waivers. I'm wondering if they didn't expect to lose him. He had been productive, although their younger players had also been doing a good job in the outfield.

People make fun of us when we don’t spend money/don’t go for it & then they make fun of us when they do spend money in an attempt to go for it. They sold $30mm in salary at the deadline. They’ll pay $5mm (which includes buying out his 2027 option). I’m glad Elias is actually taking a risk for once.
