La Liga president Javier Tebas told La Gazzetta dello Sport that FIFA president Gianni Infantino should step down, saying "his time is up" and accusing FIFA of "destroying the football industry." Tebas cited mandatory three-minute hydration breaks at the World Cup, the final's lengthy half-time interval, Infantino's suggestion of a 64-team World Cup and the decision to suspend then-postpone punishment for United States striker Folarin Balogun as examples of reckless leadership. Tebas said FIFA's election system is "rotten at its core," that Infantino retains the backing of national federations and that there is no opposition candidate willing to stand. He argued the Balogun intervention, which involved US political pressure, was "absolutely serious" and said Belgium eliminating the USA allowed the issue to be "buried," a matter he called only "the tip of the iceberg." UEFA criticised FIFA's Balogun decision as "unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable," and its president Aleksander Ceferin did not attend the World Cup final. Tebas was in the United States to see his country win the 2026 World Cup and said many people privately oppose Infantino but remain silent or complicit. Despite Tebas's call and backing from former FIFA president Sepp Blatter, Infantino is expected to be re-elected for a fourth term at FIFA's March congress, so Tebas said Infantino is unlikely to leave.
