Remco Evenepoel won Stage 16, the 26.1 km individual time trial in Thonon-les-Bains, beating overall leader Tadej Pogacar by 28 seconds and reducing his deficit to 4 minutes 32 seconds. Mattias Skjelmose finished third, 1:04 behind Evenepoel. The victory was Evenepoel's fourth Tour stage win and his second in a row; he rode a prototype bike from his manufacturer on the demanding course. German GC hopeful Florian Lipowitz crashed at high speed during the time trial, struck a barrier, held his right shoulder and was taken to a medical truck and then to hospital with shoulder and leg wounds; he abandoned the race after having been fifth overall before the stage. Team Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe said Lipowitz went for further examinations in hospital. The withdrawal of Lipowitz is the second high-profile exit within 48 hours after Jonas Vingegaard also abandoned following a crash. Team chief Ralph Denk confirmed anti-doping tests of the Red Bull team took place between 22:00 and 23:00 the previous night, a timing he said affected recovery but he accepted the controls, and teammate Nico Denz voiced no complaint about the timing.
