Sam Neill, Jurassic Park and The Piano actor, dies at 78
There is news I do not like to share. RIP Sam Neill. The New Zealand actor has had a prodigious career, notably in sci-fi. How could one forget his role in Event Horizon (1997)? But also Bicentennial Man (1999), Thor: Ragnarok, the Jurassic Park series, or his appearance in Invasion (AppleTV).
“I do hope I’m not a celebrity because … I think it’s two different jobs,” he said. “You can be an actor — hopefully a very good actor — but it’s another job to be a celebrity, and that’s one you can sign up for or not. And I never signed up for that. I’ve avoided that like the plague."
RIP Sam Neill. Fun little anecdote about Jurassic Park that I saw earlier.
I woke up to this news this morning. It’s very sad, as I’ve literally grown up watching so many of his movies. He was a really great, likeable actor.
My favourite will always be the The Dish bsky.app/profile/cabe...
This is really sad. I know that we will have to face death eventually, but still are there some people that I think will always be here especially people that I grew up watching. RIP to a Legend!
Aw man, this is sad to hear. He always seemed like a genuinely good dude. RIP Sam Neill
Sam Neil est mort :(
:/ Thos sucks to wake up to. RIP Sam Neill
This sucks. I follow him on insta, and he's like your favorite grampa such a gentle man. I'm so sad. 💔
The thing about Sam Neill is that he could do whatever you needed him to do, and he'd play it as straight as you wanted, and he'd sell it every goddamn time. Weird psychosexual stuff? Gore-soaked horror? Tearjerker? Historical drama? Blockbuster? Whatever, he's got it.
Oh wow. I loved this guy.
Genuinely sad about this one. He was always quality and sounds like a decent bloke.
Sam Neill, the New Zealand actor who was perhaps best known for his star turn as Dr. Alan Grant in the “Jurassic Park” series, died on Monday in Sydney, Australia. He was 78. Read more about his life and legacy: nyti.ms/3SWU8vI
The wistful look on his face as he gazes through the helicopter window at birds flying while music as William's plaintive score gently builds is one of the most powerful moments Spielberg ever filmed. Rest in peace, good sir.
😢💔 I really wanted to see Montana: The Hunt for Red October
First recall him as Reilly, Ace of Spies. Very talented actor.
An iconic performance in the most iconic movie of my childhood. RIP 🦖 🦕
Two movies I know him for more than JP: "Possession," one of his early films that is brutally creepy, and "In the Mouth of Madness." He will be missed!
What a fine actor with a steady career of some great simple parts and then some absolute iconic home runs. HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE (2016) was a real treat.
He would've liked to have seen Montana
Thing is, Jurassic Park isn't really about dinosaurs. It's about being a dad. And Sam Neill embodied the ultimate Dad Energy.
At the start of the movie, Alan Grant (Sam Neill) hates kids ("You really want to have one of those?") and tries in vain to ditch little Tim and Lex. But when trouble comes, he instinctively steps into the protective dad role.
One of the reasons I love The Fabelmans is that it's Spielberg openly saying "Yes, almost all of my movies are really about me still processing my parent's divorce".
I am very sorry to report that Sam Neill has died. Absolutely brilliant actor. So many great performances. Probably best known for "Jurassic Park" but was memorable in everything he appeared in.
See 'Dean Spanley' alongside the inimitable Peter O'Toole.
I don’t know what he was like in person but his work as an actor was amazing. Rest in peace.
It’s gonna be so weird watching films with now on, but we should all remember that he lived a good long life doing what he loved to do and bringing so much positivity to people.
people are sharing their favourite Sam Neill performances and im gonna leftfield it with this clip from Jurassic Park 3 because it inspired a long-running bit with one of my best friends and many hours of excitedly shouting “Alan?!” at each other while cackling.
bestie swears we’re the reason why people used to shout “Alan!” at festivals, after a very trip-fuelled Glade (2009?) where we were the loudest people on the campsite
he fucking carries that film, like he feels the same responsibility to lead everybody through a terrible idea as his character does
I am glad you shared this, this scene lives rent free in my head. "ALAN?!" - I love how they like pick up with this and go, yeah he was very traumatised from the 1st Jurassic Park incident.
Actor Sam Neill died on Monday in Sydney "surrounded by family," according to a statement. He was 78.
Ah nuts. One of my favourites. May you raise rabbits in paradise, Mr Neil.
The first thing I remember seeing Sam Neill in was a TV movie version of IVANHOE as Brian De Bois-Guilbert. I loved that movie, and remember admiring what a terrific villain he played.
