Charlie Kirk becomes punchline among young people

cultureJul 9, 202616423

Ten months after Charlie Kirk’s assassination, crude memes and face swaps using his image have proliferated across social platforms, with audio of the gunshot turning into a TikTok meme and an apparent AI-generated song called We Are Charlie Kirk being shared ironically. The trend called Kirkification superimposes his face onto unlikely images, from the Mona Lisa to a bikini photo to Jeffrey Epstein, and a viral tweet even encouraged people to take “a shot” in his honor on Juneteenth. The mockery marks a sharp change from the immediate aftermath of Kirk’s death in September, when conservatives sought to suppress criticism and hundreds were disciplined, later prompting several settlements over alleged First Amendment violations. Media sociologist Alex Turvy said forced reverence on an ironic medium helped release the mockery, while Eviane Leidig of the Center for the Study of Organized Hate said younger conservatives now often view Kirk’s messaging as “cringe.” The online noise has distracted from the prosecution of alleged shooter Tyler Robinson, whose preliminary hearings began this week in Provo, Utah, where prosecutors reportedly showed graphic videos; Robinson has not yet entered a plea. Turning Point USA, now led by Kirk’s widow Erika, has struggled to control the online narrative as other rightwing figures such as Candace Owens and Nick Fuentes jockey to fill a perceived power vacuum.
