Canada Day fireworks and evening events canceled in Ottawa after storms

cultureJul 2, 2026836,296

Canada Day evening celebrations at LeBreton Flats in Ottawa, including the fireworks display, were cancelled after prolonged severe thunderstorms brought extremely heavy rain, strong winds, lightning and threats of hail. Canadian Heritage announced the cancellation after Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning and attendees ran for cover to the nearby Canadian War Museum as conditions worsened. Thousands had gathered earlier at LeBreton Flats Park for noon ceremonies relocated from Parliament Hill, where Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke and praised unity; astronaut Jeremy Hansen then addressed the crowd of several thousand. The storms caused more than a dozen flight cancellations out of Ottawa and prevented the prime minister’s plane from taking off on schedule, forcing the cancellation of his planned evening appearance in Edmonton. Officials cited flash flooding and hail risk as reasons to call off the LeBreton Flats evening show and fireworks.
