UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk on June 26, 2026 urged prompt, independent, impartial and effective investigations into dozens of deaths in U.S. immigration custody and called for those responsible to be held to account. Türk said the U.S. has a legal and moral obligation to protect people held in immigration custody and that victims’ families are entitled to truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence. His statement cited a sharp rise in deaths reported in immigration detention, with Human Rights Watch and Physicians for Human Rights calculating at least 52 deaths in the first 500 days of President Donald Trump’s second administration and a mortality rate at its highest level in more than a decade. Türk asked for measures to prevent further loss of life while urging independent probes into every death under U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody. The call followed an announcement by the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general that it will investigate deaths in ICE custody and use of force in immigration jails.
