Prince released his sixth album “Purple Rain” on this day in 1984. It would become his first number one album, a position it would hold for 24 consecutive weeks. Thoughts? Favourite tracks? #Prince

Having the number one album, single, and movie simultaneously is a testament to how driven and talented Prince was. Just ridiculous.

... and then that fabulous movie came out a month later. Every song. Perfection. I saw his very first show in Chicago in a rather small venue and was blown the fck away.

Prince is a music icon. Not only did he create many hit songs, writing, singing, and mastering numerous instruments, but also wrote several songs sung by others. He was immensely talented and “Purple Rain” showcased this. All the songs are outstanding, so it’s impossible to pick a favorite! 💜

A no-skips masterpiece to say the least. Title track is guaranteed chills for me and Computer Blue is an all-timer.

I had this on cassette. I think I wore it out in my car. Title track for me, a song I like to sing and play myself on acoustic guitar. It works!

When Doves Cry. It was mind-blowing for a thirteen-year-old boy like me.

Why pick one? Prince was pure genius - I didn't appreciate his work at the time, but now, 40 years later it's just awesome.

He asked Neil Schon of Journey if he thought Purple Rain was too close to sounding like Faithfully before releasing it.

After working a four to twelve shift and driving across the Brooklyn Bridge with no traffic, to go see my future wife in Manhattan while blasting “I Would Die For You” is one of my favorite memories. No matter where I am when I hear that song, it brings me right back to that glorious summer night.

I had this in cassette, playing on an endless loop in my car in 1984. I had seen the film already. I played it SO MUCH that I burned myself out on it. For 40 years. I recently bought the Dolby Atmos Blu Ray release of Purple Rain and it was a treat after all this time. My favourite is PARADE.

I was seven when this came out, my sister and I listened to it over and over again. I remember my mother freaking out when she finally heard Darling Nikki 😆 Favorite track, Baby I’m a Star.
