Iran fires ballistic missiles at Israel, first strike since April

newsJun 7, 2026511,672

Iran launched ballistic missiles at northern Israel late Sunday, the first such bombardment since the April ceasefire. Israel said its air defenses engaged incoming missiles and then struck military targets in central and western Iran in retaliation. Iraq and Syria closed airspace and Iranian authorities reported explosions heard in several cities after the Israeli strikes. President Donald Trump urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to escalate, but the exchange pushed up oil prices and raised the risk of a wider regional war.

Four-byline alert: 🚨 JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel said Sunday that Iran has launched missiles at it in the first such bombardment since a fragile ceasefire took effect in early April, complicating mediation efforts for a deal to end the war. apnews.com/article/iran...

It's not a "fragile ceasefire" if they're shooting missiles at each other, it's an "ongoing war". wtf is with the dumb headlines?

Cindy Strait21

Israel keeps bombing Lebanon. Do they really think these ars on just for them to do the bombing? Do they really expect no retaliation at all? Israel has NEVER honored any of these so called ceasefires and I really wish the media would stop calling it that. Call them rearming pauses or something.

Jason16

I never thought I'd be defending Iran but wouldn't it be Israel who broke the ceasefire if they first dropped bombs on Beirut. Or am I getting misinformation?

Steve12

I don't think so. The President said Iran's military capability was destroyed.

Blue_Riverrrr11

It seems that Iran was the only one observing the “ceasefire“. Israel & the U.S. continued bombing and attacking Palestine, Lebanon, and Iran. Now that Iran fires back - after many many warnings that the ceasefire was being violated - the headlines read that Iran broke the ceasefire. Absolute BS.

Retaliatory strikes after Israel struck southern Lebanon

I don't know that I would trust this statement from them. Kinda like how we don't trust anything Putin says about Ukraine. Or anything Trump says period.

IDK, at this point, would anyone totally rule out Netanyahu staging some bombs to go off in Israel so he could justify his ongoing hostilities? I mean, before Oct 7th, he'd been sending money through Qatar to fund Hamas in Gaza. Who would put anything past him to stay in power and out of prison?

AP lede should also include that it was in retaliation over Israel bombing Beirut.

can anybody take a stab at explaining to me what Iran was thinking with the missiles at Israel today?

Sending a message to Israel after Israel crossed a red line in bombing Beirut. Lebanon as a whole was part of the ceasefire. Israel has nonetheless continued its offensive. Iran held back until Israel hit Beirut.

#StupidSuez93

Israel agreed not to strike Beirut and then struck Beirut and Iran is affirming that Lebanon is in fact going to be part of the deal or there'll be no deal

post malone ergo propter malone61

ok, ceremonial counterstrike-as-promised coupled with "and now we're done" message which is not landing quite as hoped?

escapedexplorer.bsky.social25

"look if y'all [i.e., Israel and the US, separately or together] aren't going to stop bombing, invading, and otherwise de facto annexing southern Lebanon, parts of Syria, etc., we don't consider that abiding by the ceasefire and so you need to be made aware of that" ?

Rosvo115

from what I understand, the logic was iran saying that they'll retaliate if beirut is bombed by israel and then it was bombed and so they followed through

Bartholomew Collins14

They want to keep trump from attending game 3

ashley 🌹13

payback for strikes in Beirut I believe

William Easley9

Sounds like Israel bombed somewhere in Beirut and Iran had said that the ceasefire holds as longs as Beirut doesn’t get bombed

Warren Terra8

The obvious answer is that Israel broke the latest ceasefire with its attacks in Lebanon (or at least broke it on a scale the other breaks couldn't match) and Iran wanted to reply, and also to show it had managed to retain some long-range strike capability, and just generally seem proactive.

Christo Silvia8

I think it's harder than you think to get the missile guys not to shoot missiles if they want to. It's like, their thing. The missiles make a cool sound when you launch them.

Reminding Trump the ceasefire is contingent on Lebanon and showing their continued support for Hezbollah. Israel struck the suburbs of Beirut which Iran said they would consider a clear violation of the current ceasefire

Wandering Hoo5

"Fuck you, talk shit get hit" I don't think there's a grand strategy here.

Gluten-free Seitan5

That they needed to support Hezbollah, which is only in this war to support Iran.

Insipid Twaddle4

They had set a red line regarding attacks on Beirut, and Israel assassinated a couple Lebanese military officers in Beirut yesterday.

Burning1always4

I'll take a stab. These retaliatory strikes are essentially a leverage play. Iran is forcing Israel’s allies into a corner: either exert real pressure on them to stop operations in Lebanon, or face a wider regional conflict that threatens the entire regional/global landscape.

fffanatic063

Iran is currently several rival internal factions with resisting the US war as the only unifying goal. I figure there's bound to be decisions made that make sense if you know the internal politics but which are otherwise random

Wander Where2

Credibility in the region. US admin, Trump in particular, is known not to stick to what was said. Iran needs their threats, their red lines, believed. If it’s not then the leverage they have over the strait is harder to enforce.

Andrew Robbins2

"Keep bombing Beirut and there'll be more" probably

joelcawley.bsky.social2

Not hard. They were clear that if Israel attacked Beirut they would respond. Israel did and so they did as promised.

"we want to show we're not owned and keep the war going because we think we're winning"?

Wallet Inspector MetaBlueSky ♨️2

They wanted to showcase that they 1) have the missiles, and 2) they were actually pissed at Israel this time and not Kuwait for giving them a bloody nose, so 3) they sought to hit Israel and came up with another damp squib, if you believe Israel.

worm2

making it clear that if israel doesn’t stop there’s no chance of a peace deal
