A federal judge in Rhode Island, John J. McConnell Jr., vacated a Trump-era USCIS policy that froze decisions on asylum claims, work permits, green cards and naturalization for applicants from 39 travel-ban countries. The court found U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services unlawfully withheld benefits and placed the lives of countless individuals on hold solely because of their countries of birth. The ruling obliges USCIS to resume processing those pending applications, potentially allowing thousands of healthcare workers, researchers and other immigrants to regain employment and immigration relief.
