James Milner announces retirement at 40
James Milner announced his retirement from professional football at age 40, confirming he will end a 24-season career in a heartfelt social media post. Milner played Premier League football for Leeds United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and finished at Brighton & Hove Albion. He leaves as the Premier League all time appearance leader, closing one of the competition's most durable and versatile careers.
Perhaps testament to the extraordinary career of James Milner is that his retirement aged 40 still seems about ten years premature. Disappointed that we didn’t get to bookend his career but I wish him all the best in whatever comes next. A fantastic footballer & a terrific man too. #lufc
Beyond the much mooted return to Leeds fantasy, even though he’s 40 it didn’t seem beyond the realm of possibility that he’d go to the EFL or MLS for a year or two at least. 20 apps in the PL this past season suggests he still has it in his legs but of course he must know his own body. #lufc
Impressive to play for so many clubs and to be loved and respected by the fans of every one. A true professional.
