Wes Streeting urges UK to rejoin EU as he launches Labour leadership bid

politicsMay 17, 2026382,091

On 17 May 2026 Wes Streeting launched a Labour leadership bid and explicitly called for the UK to rejoin the European Union, calling Brexit a "catastrophic mistake." He confirmed he will stand to challenge Sir Keir Starmer for the Labour leadership. Streeting’s rejoin pledge directly contrasts with Starmer’s cautious approach and risks alienating voters in Labour’s northern heartlands, with implications for the upcoming Makerfield by-election. For voters and parties, the move makes EU membership a central, immediate question for the next Labour leadership contest and future general elections.

It's truly inspiring to see Wes Streeting call for decisiveness in govt after a week in which he denied he'd resign; then resigned but said he wouldn't stand as leader; then said finally he intends to stand as leader, so we can rejoin the EU, a policy he was dead against last week.

The important thing to remember here is that Wes Streeting is a colossal dickhead

Wombat12

To have all of this only two years in with a massive majority, with Farage circling like a rancid old vulture, beggars belief.

Patius Fatius Felinus10

…& there you were saying 2 days ago that you weren’t going to do A Week In Labour! A fine effort Russ nonetheless!

Bettina Struff #Woke #FBPE #FBPR #NHS #RejoinEU8

He'll be telling everybody he hates private healthcare and is in fact a staunch trans ally next. Seriously, I wouldn't trust Streeting to look after my cat, let alone run the country.

KashmiraSinghMann ☬ 🇬🇧🇨🇵🇮🇳🇺🇦🇨🇦☬6

Why should anyone vote for someone who runs away when the going gets tough? Keir fought and brought Labour from a distant 2nd to huge winners. What has Wes done? Nothing in comparison.stop treating the leadership as musical chairs and get down to the hard work of pushing for EU rejoining.

Sire Lord of Himalayas5

Methinks his political capital so far is going to vanish in few weeks/months. He is like a bad Tory in Labour disguise- all about me!

christhecatsmum.bsky.social4

He's gonna get very dizzy. Next I expect him to say that the NHS must resist any private company involvement.

Elaine (Love & Life)4

I think it is time for this man to keep silent. The arrogance coming from both him and Burnham is just breathtaking. It's as if the voters are just pawns to their relentless ambition. What was it about pride going before a fall? I cannot wait for that by-election.

Rick3

Couldn't lie straight in bed. If everything he said about the leadership were true, which I don't doubt was / is then he was complicit and if it weren't for personal interest why did he not resign earlier, even from the shadow cabinet if that was how it was! POS that one.

Sir Andy KBE3

He's basically the Labour Party's Robert Jenrick.

Alistair King3

I’m very suspicious of Streeting but these are, for the most part, criticisms of the conventions of politics rather than of him: if you’re a minister, you can never say you’re going to resign until you do or offer any opinions that stray from the government’s. Not sure how we deal with this reality…

Raymond Bennett3

He wants to force Burnham's hand ahead of a by-election he could lose to Reform.

Look, I don’t know very much about Wes Streeting, so this is not an endorsement by any means, but if he helps to shake the inner-British discussion about Europe and the general geopolitical landscape out of cloud cuckoo land, then well done him.

Disagree with him, call him v. unrealistic or indeed opportunistic. Fine. But at least this may help start a conversation about the world *as it is now* and with which Lisa Nandy may wish to catch up. "We settled this 10 years ago” is not very convincing at a time of seismic geopolitical change.

Ben Stanley16

I think this is more a Lisa Nandy problem than a British public opinion problem. Plenty of British people in public life do not consider the idea of rejoining remotely odd.

Zac6

Streeting, despite being gay, is a bigot against trans people. He's a snake. And he's completely bought out by private medical interests.

Sir Richard Mountbasket🏳️‍🌈🇪🇺5

The trouble with Streeting is he's a liar, a snake, and a political opportunist who will say anything to get into power. He's a bought and paid-for member of the Mandelson-Epstein classes. Starmer also told a whole bunch of lies in his leadership campaign, promises he backtracked on sharpish.

Sarah Darer Littman4

As a dual 🇺🇸/🇬🇧, nothing would make me happier than for Britain to rejoin the EU. As my son said in November 2016 after Brexit and Trump's election, "I've been betrayed by both of my countries."

stefaniabarutta.bsky.social4

Lisa Nandy has a Leave seat (was a Remainer) she doesn’t want the conversation reopened because she wants to keep 1. Her Secretary of State Job 2. Her seat. Why? because she can’t or won’t make the argument to her constituents of why it was the WRONG decision to Brexit.

Andrew Duff2

But he should stop talking about another SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP. We’ve had enough of ‘em. bsky.app/profile/andr...

isosolies.bsky.social2

Lisa Nandy, no solutions just grumbling. Its not odd to want to rejoin the EU, especially when Brexit hasnt done anything to improve the UK after 10 years.

I would not trust him an inch.

Streetings rejoin EU pledge paired with tossing Palantir’s salad is a choice

Bremain in Spain16

Does anyone actually believe, him, he's to into the pocket of Palantir

timbothewiz.bsky.social13

Streeting as PM would be a catastrophic mistake

รℓσαɳε ℓყรɓεƭɦ 🏳️‍🌈13

wes streeting is lying to you.

Hatstand11

How many times can the Starmer/Streeting/Reed (ex McSweeney) cabal dangle Europe in front of us without taking any action and expect us to believe in them?

Neil Tabor9

Streeting is totally untrustworthy, also has he got the 81 MPs to support him. He is in hock to American Private Healthcare Companies.

Rachael P 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈 🇬🇧 🇦🇺8

Having done his best, unprompted AFAICT, to ensure the UK cannot comply with the ECHR in respect of trans rights... I assume he thinks *saying* he wants to rejoin, knowing how difficult he has made it, gives him the best of both worlds.

Rob Cave5

Ah, Wes has realised he isn’t popular enough to become leaders and is looking for ways to make more people like him. The problem is that the folk who don’t like him are REALLY motivated in their dislike for him and his previous actions and policies, and there isn’t really much he can do about it.

Richard Approximately5

I don't believe a single word any Labour MP says about rejoining the EU/closer ties/EU reset. It's just crumbs thrown at those centre-left people who have switched to the Greens. There'll lure you in, like they did in '24, then turn their back on you with shite like "make Brexit work".

Fi 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Independence For Scotland! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿3

I can’t fathom why anyone would pick that whey-faced wee prig as the party leader. There’s not a shred of authenticity in anything he says.

Corrydes 3

No he isn’t, he just spouted better relationship, better deal stuff parroting Starmer !

tsoprano.bsky.social3

The brass neck on this fucker. Sold us out to Palantir and then comes out with this... He stated that the country had “chosen to hand the pen to tech moguls in Silicon Valley to write our future for us. It’s time to take the pen back.”

Jane Harbison3

Sick of the egos and selfish behaviour of these men

Mark3

Rejoin “one day”. And Burnham “in the long term there is a case”. Both too scared of it and pandering to potential Reform voters to actually embrace rejoining EU as a firm policy. Same old same old

michael-martin22.bsky.social3

He’s got no chance because he’s not popular with Labour voters, only winning his seat by a small margin. His dubious connections to private health care providers has also affected his popularity. This is something that Starmer should have stopped but never did.

Andrew Thompson 🇪🇺🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ 💛🤍💜🖤3

Spouting platitudes about the EU while being Palantir's bitch aren't compatible. Anyone wanting to vote for him needs to think long and hard beforehand. Yes we do need to rejoin, but would you trust a snake oil salesman?

Joe B2

Palantir Steering, is that? Mandleson Streeting, you say?

LilacLiz 🇪🇺🇺🇦🏳️‍🌈🇨🇦🇬🇱2

Wouldn't vote for him, but he does have a point. And tiptoeing around trying not to offend Reform voters on the subject of Brexit is a total waste of time.

Sylvia Booth2

But it wasn’t a bid to rejoin - it was a bid to get closer with the aim of rejoining. What is the difference between that and Starmer ?

rktecture2

Streeting is so naive / delusional. Another Badenoch style personality.

Steve Gilbert2

But taking £1000s in freebies isn't?

Grateful Dad2

Fuck off wes, Palantir ring any bells you self serving slime ball

Robert Royston2

Fleecing Streeting! Best option is Starmer holds EU referendum. He agrees to stand down as PM if Rejoin wins. Reform disbands.

Honest Dr John2

That's a hefty weight on the scales in his favour, but it doesn't offset the donations/bribes from private healthcare companies to the bloke in charge of the NHS. And I'm not even mentioning Israel.

Tony Dexter2

Wonder if this is true?

TheFirstGirlySwotsToJoinBlueSky
@thelastgirlyswots.bsky.social

. Well Wes Streeting has got that one right - 54% of Brits want to rejoin the EU according to the latest YouGov survey, compared to 34% who don't! #trevorphillips #BBClaurak #bbcbh #toriesgone681 .

Angela Rayner is the only potential Labour leadership candidate to reject a return to the EU. She told ITV this week: “Many businesses are saying that it's been a challenge, that Brexit and the way in which it was implemented has challenged their ability to be competitive… 1/2

Mark Chadbourn65

“…to get access to the EU market and therefore we should be addressing those challenges not going back to the old argument - are we in or out.” 2/2

Tabitha Potts38

Yes, but it isn’t possible to reap the benefits of being in the EU without being part of it 🙄

BrianinFrance31

Many businesses have left the UK because of Brexit. The UK still desperately needs leadership with vision.

Susanita22

Well it’s one way to exclude yourself from the top job ! People want vision & change .., not more bloody red lines !

Jameslet20

Thousands of small exporters went bust, so of course they won’t be saying anything about how challenging it has been.

Dan Istired Ofthisshitt15

Good god. It's all so stupid. I thought we'd gone beyond this bullshit by kicking out the Tories. I'm really starting to wonder about lead poisoning in the house of commons.

chiller15

I wonder if she just wants to make sure she doesn't get the job.

Elena Adaal14

This is actually good, since it will give Labour the straight choice: for or against EU. The Tories did choose against EU, and are now doubling down on their road to oblivion. I would not be surprised if Labour did the same. Being suicidal is a ‘normal’ choice in UK politics.

Dawny B9

Dim as an unlit bulb. Ducks.

CllrAndyOddy9

Labour showing, as ever, how useless they are at addressing the issues that matter. When root cause is obvious, pretending there is a tactical fix when after a decade outside the club the club members are still saying “no benefits without membership” is poor leadership. Strategic solution is rejoin.

Anonymous X6

Angela Rayner was a vocal Leaver, and sickeningly gloated on Twitter at people asking about how their partners and family could be affected by Brexit. She’s Reform Lite, and shouldn’t let anywhere near the Labour leadership.

David4

I am surprised at that. Is Andy Burnham the Labour political impact equivalent of Boris Johnson?

Chris Barks4

Looks like everyone is unable or unwilling to read the room. The UK will disintegrate into a political landscape of a dozen "parties" of 5-12% each. Thanks to the strange voting system, that will be enough to "elect" a PM. No real leaders in sight, anywhere. Bit like the US. Trump and nothing else.

Paul Tyreman 〓〓3

Angela, it's not the way it was done, it's that it happened at all. I wonder if maybe Angela was one of the 588 MPs who voted to abdicate their responsibility and ask the famously well-informed and intelligent UK public what to do?

David Youngs3

Wonder if that sophistry will work for her. I don't think so.

Carl H3

Ah yes the way it was implemented... what 🤨🤔 As a reminder the referendum had two choices, not should it be implemented like this or like that ... and we clearly foolishly now voted to Leave. 🤯

Putin, the Funking Barsteward3

Can't see that is going to help her cause.

Alexander Hay3

"We just haven't tried the real Communism yet!"

Blueski-by-sea3

Is this challenge just Red Wall Labour MPs, representing Leave constituencies, worried that Starmer/Reeves edging closer to the EU will lose them their jobs? Because that's increasingly how it looks.

Steve2

I predict Brexit will do to Labour what it did to the Tories. We'll have green and libdem Vs reform.

Steve2

Labour seems to be choosing the path of the Tories. Candidates offering no change and other parties with bold EU stances will take their voters. The demise of the two main parties will be written about extensively over the coming years and how much can be put down to a lack of vision and courage
