EU’s Kaja Kallas rejects Gerhard Schröder as negotiator
Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said Gerhard Schröder is unfit to mediate EU-Russia talks after Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested the former German chancellor could negotiate on Europe's behalf in the Russia-Ukraine war. Kallas pointed to Schröder's long-standing lobbying for Russian state-owned companies and his past roles as Rosneft board chair and member of the Nord Stream 2 shareholders committee. Germany expressed skepticism about Putin's proposal and Ukraine also rejected the suggestion, saying Schröder's Moscow ties create an unacceptable conflict of interest. The dispute matters because any mediator with close financial or political links to Moscow would undermine trust in peace talks and complicate EU unity on sanctions and security policy.
❗️Berlin dismissed Putin’s idea of making Gerhard Schröder an EU peace negotiator, calling it unserious and part of Russia’s hybrid strategy. German government circles said Moscow has not changed its conditions, and Europe should not let the move sow division. #Germany
Hey, @spd.de, perhaps an idea to finally kick that Putin puppet out of your party? cc @spdfraktion.de
Thanks to Berlin for ensuring that Germany doesn’t appoint GS as a negotiator. Putin won’t choose a negotiator either; he’ll simply agree to one selected by the EU and Ukraine. Once three or four more refineries have been destroyed, that will happen very quickly.
🇪🇺 Kallas: If we give the right to Russia to appoint negotiator on our behalf, you know, that would not be very wise. I think Gerhard Schröder has been the high-level lobbyist for Russian state, so that actually, you know, he would be sitting on both sides of the table.
Schröder is basically Europe's Witkoff.
And that is absolutely correct
The person of the negotiator is irrelevant as long as Russia is not ready to negotiate.
That's putting it diplomatically. In fact, Schröder would be fully on the Russian side. The fact that he is fluent in German does not imply that he is pro-German or even pro-European. Schröder could, however, be a negotiator representing Russia.
Remember that the "negotiations" is, and has always been, a stalling strategy preventing the west from moving faster than they otherwise would with the sanctions. You do not negotiate with a war criminal. Unless Putin shows up in the Hague: arm, help, invest, finance Ukraine, disrupt Russia.
Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder is unfit to represent Europe in any peace talks to end the Russia-Ukraine war, the EU’s chief diplomat Kaja Kallas has said.
Since when does Putin get a say in who negotiates for Europe? It's none of his business and is just an excuse to not participate in talks at all. He thinks he can treat Europe like he treats Trump who we all know is incredibly stupid and has the attention-span of a gnat.
Gehard Schröder is not only unfit to represent Europa but unfit to represent any reasonable person with ethical principles and understanding.
Schröder was a top-level lobbyist for Russian state-owned energy companies. That is exactly why Putin wants him at the negotiating table – Schröder would basically be sitting on both sides of it.
