Takashi Tezuka to retire as Nintendo executive in June
Takashi Tezuka will retire from Nintendo's board of directors on June 26, 2026, per the company's updated personnel notice. He is ending a more than 40-year career as a veteran designer and director at Nintendo. Tezuka worked on landmark titles including the original Super Mario Bros., Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and served as producer on Super Mario Bros. Wonder. His retirement removes a longtime architect of Mario and Zelda gameplay from Nintendo's board.
When I spoke to Takashi Tezuka back in 2023, he really emphasized that it was a time for Nintendo brass to pass the torch to a younger generation of devs who grew up with the franchise and had their own fresh perspectives. Zero ego there.
"I said to them, 'I’m really grateful that you're being protective of Mario, but I really want you to think about what Mario needs to be now. What do you think Mario needs to be in order to play it the way *you* want to play Mario.'” www.rollingstone.com/culture/rs-g...
He totally has a point. Mario doesn’t need to have been under the direction of the same men through his entire career. We need to have new people in charge of his games now.
[Retirement] Takashi Tezuka is retiring from his position of Executive Officer at Nintendo on Jun 26. Some of his most notable contributions include working alongside Shigeru Miyamoto to create games like Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda for the NES.

oh wow we really are hitting a new era for nintendo huh his output in recent years has been more spotty, but goddamn it he is mainly responsible for a LOT of great games, gonna suck to lose him completely i have faith in the new blood though 🧡
