Poll workers step up amid Election Day machine outages and long shifts

Poll workers across multiple states are working extended shifts and using contingency procedures to keep voting moving amid equipment problems. Maryland poll workers spent long hours training voters and responding to unexpected challenges to ensure polling places ran smoothly, according to Maryland Matters. In Westchester County, New York, several polling scanners failed; poll workers directed voters to complete emergency paper ballots that were sealed in secure orange ballot bags and supervised by bipartisan teams. The New York Election Protection Coalition said those paper emergency ballots will be counted and urged voters that if they prefer to use a machine they can return later once machines are fixed. The Florida Democratic Party is operating a Voter Protection Assistance Hotline for all 67 counties, offering help in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole, reachable at (833) VOTE-FLA or (833) 868-3352. Poll workers and local voter-protection teams are managing lines, advising voters, and implementing established emergency procedures where machines fail.
