Shabana Mahmood softens immigration rules for care workers
The Times bemoaning the cost to the Treasury of falling immigration and also bemoaning the cost of not reducing it further. Because The Times is a deeply dishonest, rightwing propaganda rag that peddles prejudice but refuses to take any responsibility for the inevitable failure that follows.
The untroubled arrogance is staggering really... The Times has championed Brexit, Trump, fossil fuels, leaving the ECHR and zealous anti-immigration measures… all of which are demonstrably divisive and ruinous for our country… But still they sit up on their Tory high horse sneering at the left.
The Times, once reputable and the newspaper of record, is little more than emergency arse-wipe these days.
Aren't we all so very, very tired of these liars in our media.
Add in the declining birthrate in much of Europe & we'd be in severe trouble without immigration
The Times another right wing media source where balanced journalism goes to die. They will always link negatives to immigration, they support a racist agenda, Mahmood has pleased no-one, racists claim she protects immigrants and people like me she fails migrants, protecting the 'higher earners'.
Murdock placing Tony Gallagher as the editor has certainly been a contributing factor in the paper’s move to a right-wing perspective.
Are we able to say that the Times is a hugely dishonest “newspaper” owned by foreign interests, run for the benefit of oligarchs and the super wealthy, to the detriment of… well, everybody else in the country? Yes. I think we are.
"The Times is a deeply dishonest, rightwing propaganda rag that peddles prejudice but refuses to take any responsibility for the inevitable failure that follows." I like that.
"What remains is a complicated, arbitrary & punitive system, imposing real costs on individuals, families and UK economy, while delivering little fiscal benefit. A policy in desperate – and failing – search of a rationale. What, exactly, is the point?" Me in @zeteo.uk zeteo.uk/p/debunked-s...
On the £10bn figure: "The home secretary, egged on by discredited “research” from right-wing think tanks, shamelessly reproduced by xenophobic media commentators, originally claimed the post-Brexit surge in migration would impose huge costs on taxpayers. But this crumbled on closer examination."
The point is for Labour to continue to be reform lite in the hope of picking up a couple of knuckle draggers votes 🗳️ Which they won’t … @mrjamesob.bsky.social
There are so few safe & legal routes so how is it ok to doubly penalize those who come here by the most desperate means? 30 years for citizenship? We literally couldn’t fill our vacancies for care workers so why is it their privelege to come here, & not ours? www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...
“Analysis published on Monday found skilled migrants settling in the UK were expected to contribute billions more to the public finances than they cost over their lifetimes.” Whose privelege again? One day we will look back and remember that we were once lucky enough that ppl chose to come here.
These supposed legal routes seem weak & sound bureaucratic. If a qualified nurse or teacher arrives from a war torn country in a boat, he/she has similar skills to someone who didn't, but would have to wait longer for ILR as a refugee while making a similar contribution.
you conflate two things - those who arrive in boats and care workers on a visa. As I understand it, the latter are NOT having the terms they understood apply to them changed Perhaps if critics actually had proposals to address the issues, they might gain more respect
Because we're a racist country
Very annoying they were vilifying 'illegals' in the fashion of the (considerable) racist element of Reform and the Tories. No consideration of how we could: firstly aid desperate people and secondly; actually benefit from their presence on these shores.
There is no credible basis for saying the government climbdown on settlement will cost £10 billion. (Though it is true that the Home Secretary implied a saving of £10bn, which overstated the case by about £9.5bn). So it would be accurate to say she said that, but inaccurate to say it is true!
In princiole, it ought to be possible claims that the uturn costs £10 bn with Ipso under accuracy, as it is not true. (Though mot to challenge reports that simply attribute claim to Home Sec, without saying its true, as she did say it. Home Office dont defend that stat) bsky.app/profile/sund...
"the Home Secretary implied a saving of £10bn, which overstated the case by about £9.5bn" is a very polite way of saying she was talking bullshit.
I'm pig fucking sick of using migrants as political footballs. I've worked in management, had own business and grafted in social care. By far the best experience was working with migrants from all over the world in social care. www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cm...
We should be welcoming migrants, for putting the effort into uprooting themselves - and often their families - to help make Scotland a better place for everyone. We should be supporting them as they settle in. We should be helping them assimilate and feel comfortable here.
By far the worst was working in sales management - the high earners we're supposed to worship. Absolute scum of the earth as far as I'm concerned. I'm still friends with migrants, but not with my sales colleagues. Says a lot 🤑
apple.news/AVtofVxtrT36... Just awful, a soft headline for disgusting policies by a ‘Labour’ Home Secretary. I have to concede that this is the reality of a country that has swung very much to the far right with regards to immigration. I still feel sick though. Labour needs to make the argument.
An utterly sickening and cruel policy which stains the Labour Party forever.
I was angry, I am even more angry. Mahmood belongs in the bin quite frankly. This is nonsense red meat for people that need educating. People's lives are being messed with - people that actually help the economy and our society as a whole. Unlike the super wealthy...
I'm all for rejoining the EU, and all for anything the PM wants to do to re-negotiate our relationship with the EU. But before we have a conversation about freedom of movement, maybe we should be having a conversation about how we treat refugees.
The carve-out for care workers and nursing auxiliaries is welcome but expected as soon as Burnham started highlighting social care as a big priority. The stuff on refugees/asylum seekers is utterly disgusting and we must fight to reverse it.
Appalling. As a member, I feel extremely uncomfortable.
Contemptible, stupid and counterproductive changes in a desperate attempt to appease "legitimate concerns". It's the end of Labour as any kind of socialist or even liberal party They've lost my vote for good. Pathetic people. www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cm...
Just resigned from the Jewish Labour Movement, the moribund Labour Party Irish Society and unsubscribed from the Fab Ians. UK Labour's new immigration policy is unconscionable.
Bet there’s loads of Reform and Restore people changing their voting intentions now….oh, no one, none at all…
Good decision They're desperate to be the "Thatcher Tory Lite" party Time the unions started defunding them
are you feeling Blue? Glasman won.
Shabana Mahmood will announce - finally - the sweeping changes to indefinite leave to remain. Most will have to wait 10 years to settle, though there are means to reduce it, but there are expected to be concessions for care workers already here. More tomorrow www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
Such horrible messaging. "We hate you all but reluctantly accept we need some of you to help us" Why would anyone think of setting up home in the UK when the govt treats foreign workers with contempt. Paves the way for even more exploitation and othering
She should not be pandering to right wing voters. They won't vote for Labour regardless, so set up the system to be fair rather than to chase imaginary votes.
Hello from the Northfield constituency. I like my MP and campaigned for him but resigned my membership over this issue. Labour, for me, is the helping hand not the iron fist. Let's see what Shabana announces.
How can we claim that we want to improve the care system when care workers are treated with such disrespect. This isn’t a Labour value that I recognise @katiewhitemp.bsky.social
They are literally alienating basically all of their future voters from this cohort
Not how one wins the next GE
Yet again, an angle on this which never gets an airing, which few British people seem aware of or care about, is the destructive effect on cross-border relationships (British citz & foreign spouses). Avenues to people settling together in UK or elsewhere, are shrivelling & disappearing year by year
Can we please finally drop the, "Dems would be center-right in the UK," bullshit when the Labour Party is doing xenophobic bullshit like a common MAGA.
sweeping, punitive changes based on a lie of automatic settlement (which doesn't exist), to reduce care workers (who shouldn't be reduced, and are now exempt) so everyone else is punished for some reason. has anyone seen a single news site call out the automatic settlement lie? anyone? just one site
Changing the terms and rules on immigrants retrospectively is a tool from the Trump playbook
This policy remains horrendous despite the ‘watering down’. But the politics of this are bizarre. The whole ‘point’ of these reforms was targeted at the significant group of care workers that arrived during the pandemic. Now they will be exempt (good). So what was the point?
I know we aren’t short of absurdities in politics, but proposing a crackdown on settlement in large part to stop large numbers of care workers applying, and then having to reverse course into exempting care workers, is truly absurd.
I'm increasingly suspicious of these changes coming so quickly after the budget.
If the Government recognises the damage these plans would cause for some workers......why is that damage acceptable for everyone else? Care workers are not the only people who have built their lives here, raised families, and paid taxes. bsky.app/profile/jess...
What the fuck are these morons doing
Immigration is one of the most controversial & politically salient issues of the past decade or more. It would be nice if Labour had policies on that subject that reflected different principles from the Tory governments that preceded them.
