U.S. clears potential $2.1B sale of 500 Patriot missiles to Ukraine

The U.S. State Department approved a potential sale of 500 Patriot PAC-3 MSE interceptor missiles to Ukraine, a deal valued at about $2.1 billion, the department said Friday. The PAC-3 MSE is the most advanced Patriot variant and one of the few systems capable of intercepting ballistic missiles; Ukraine’s supply had run dry earlier this month. The sale is not subsidized or financed by the United States; Ukraine will cover the estimated cost using contributions from Canada, Germany and Norway plus a loan from the European Union. The release did not specify delivery dates or whether any missile components would be produced in Ukraine under an offset agreement, and the State Department said it was not aware of an existing arrangement with Lockheed Martin but that Kyiv could negotiate directly. The authorization follows weeks of tensions between the U.S. and Ukraine after President Donald Trump announced a deal to allow Russian diesel exports, waived related sanctions, threatened to withhold intelligence over Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries, and briefly limited Ukraine’s access to the Starshield satellite system. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised the approval but warned deliveries must arrive soon, noting reports that deliveries might begin only in a few years and calling for an immediate winter support rate of 100 interceptors per month.
