John Healey to ask Ofgem to remove gas standing charges from bills

Chancellor John Healey will ask Ofgem to remove the fixed daily gas standing charge for about 23 million homes from around 2027, calling the fee "unfair and outdated". The Treasury says the change could save two thirds of account-holding households an average of £45 a year by shifting the cost into unit rates. Moving the cost onto unit rates means households that use a lot of gas will most likely pay more overall, while poorer households that use less gas currently bear a larger share of the standing charge. Ofgem research found 61% of people view standing charges as unfair and the charity Nesta warned the abolition shifts costs from poorer households to wealthier ones, noting some households pay year-round for gas they only use seasonally. Healey said scrapping the charge will give millions a bit of breathing space and draw a line under past energy policy failures, and Andy Burnham said the move is about basic fairness and giving people more control over bills. The announcement sits alongside other budget energy measures including a previously implemented six-month VAT suspension on electricity and plans for a targeted package for means-tested households worth about £1 billion.
