Jordanian security forces arrested three armed suspects on Monday after a dayslong search following a deadly attack on a Greek Orthodox church funeral in Karak. Police found the suspects hiding in an abandoned house in the village of Al-Jadeeda; the men refused to surrender, attacked security forces, who returned fire, wounded and then detained all three after a roughly three-hour confrontation. Authorities recovered firearms and live ammunition and reported no casualties among security personnel. The attackers opened fire at a funeral in the village of Hamoud on Friday, killing eight people and wounding 40, the Ministry of Health said; 27 of the injured remained in hospital and one was critically ill after surgery. Jordan’s Public Security Directorate said the suspects had met their “just fate” and added that “terrorism has no place among us.” King Abdullah II vowed the perpetrators would face the “harshest penalties” and ordered a review of security procedures; Government Communication Minister Mohammad Momani praised the operation as a successful joint effort. Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya said authorities would probe why young people embrace violence and hold accountable anyone who participated in the attack.
