More than 100 Alberta polling stations failed to open on time Monday, Elections Alberta confirmed, so those stations will remain open later and official results will be delayed until after all polls close. The agency released a list of affected stations and revised closing times late Monday; the latest to close will be Edmonton’s Westminster School, now scheduled to remain open until 10 p.m. MT instead of the planned 8 p.m. Elections staff said anyone in line when a station closes will be allowed to vote and that counting of advance and special ballots will begin at 5 p.m. Several voters reported long waits or temporary closures early in the day, including Calgary resident Steve Koristka who waited more than an hour in Rocky Ridge and Edmonton voter Myrna Doiron who could not finish voting until about noon at Westminster School. Elections Alberta also reported ballot shortages at Maskwacis, where couriers were sent to deliver more ballots amid strong turnout. Albertans are voting on whether to pursue a second binding referendum on separation plus nine other questions on immigration and the Constitution, and Elections Alberta said 1.3 million people had already voted by mail-in and advanced ballots before referendum day.
