Ukrainian forces launched a large overnight drone attack on St. Petersburg on Oct. 18, striking the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal, a VKontakte data center, the Ruchyi oil depot, a bridge and industrial warehouses, Russian officials and media reported. Leningrad Oblast Governor Aleksandr Drozdenko said authorities shot down 127 Ukrainian drones over the region; eyewitness footage and videos showed drones and Russian air defenses in action and large explosions lighting the night sky. St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov reported fires at the oil terminal, the Ruchyi depot and sites in the Kolpinsky District, and said one person was killed, five were injured, 12 apartment buildings and two houses were damaged. Ukrainian monitoring channels Exilenova+ and Supernova+ said the attack began at 2:50 a.m. local time; Ukrainian drone maker Fire Point claimed its FP-1 attack drone was used against the terminal. Russian independent outlet Astra reported a power substation hit, with resulting blackouts and low water pressure in parts of the region. The strike on VKontakte’s data center follows recent Ukrainian strikes on Russian internet infrastructure and comes after President Volodymyr Zelensky pledged Ukraine would respond in kind to attacks on Ukrainian data centers; Kyiv Independent noted it could not independently verify all reported targets or damage at the time of publication.
