BBC to stop recording The Archers in Birmingham for first time

tvOct 12, 20263089

The BBC has scrapped plans to build a radio drama theatre in Digbeth and will, for the first time in The Archers' 75-year history, stop recording the show in Birmingham as part of the corporation's £500 million cost-cutting programme. An internal email said the BBC will not build a new studio at the Tea Factory and is exploring recording the programme in existing UK studios, including potential private facilities in the West Midlands. The move was originally scheduled as a transfer from the Mailbox to the Tea Factory in 2028. BBC insiders warned separating actors from production crews could harm last-minute script tweaks and creative collaboration, with one source saying,

They really need to rearrange this headline, because I was so stunned by the first six words I nearly didn’t make it through the rest

Why is the BBC cutting programmes while still having an Archers podcast? I've no objection to it, but there are several other Archers podcasts like @thecidershedpod.bsky.social and @dumteedum.bsky.social so how can the BBC justify it when times are tight? #TheArchers

I’m more annoyed that the BBC pay some awful presenters £350,000+ a year,.. about double the bloody UK Prime Minister! Most of us can’t stand those overpaid presenters either! I’ve emailed my complaint. I hope others do too. Use the money to give youth needed jobs and work experience.

You’re partially correct with your recommendations there, Iain lol. #TheArchers

No-one of any calibre would listen to the BBC podcast, anyway. #JohnnyComeLatelies

So easy for the BBC to treat Birmingham with absolute disdain. There's never any fight back and the local politicians are easily fobbed off. No BBC television studio, no continuous drama and now no radio drama made in Birmingham.

Calling it the "jewel in the crown" whilst tearing up plans for new studio is not very reassuring. #TheArchers

Just heard this on the news, was very worried when they said that The Archers is the latest show to be affected by BBC cuts. Not impressed. #TheArchers

Oh she’s had plenty of lessons, starting many years ago making a grave mistake as our car was about to go under the Channel and she said ‘tell me about The Archers then’? By the time we were out the other side and had made it to Brussels she’d heard the full history and several episodes.
